I am going to attempt to power an Atlas f3 phase II diesel dummy with MTH motors. Bob Delbridge has done that, but says he may have just gotten lucky. The motors are vertical in both powered units, and the drive shafts may be the same. Anyone else done that?

Have tinkered with trying to power the Atlas dummies with several different motors. The gear size and mounting is different and shaft lengths are different from what I have checked on a GP 38 and GP 9.
If you manage let us know what parts you found worked??
Bob,
A lot can be said for those who love to tinker around with toy trains. I'll admit to doing so myself .
I think that you need to talk with a true professional. Frank Timko can answer your questions. You can Google him at, FrankTimkoDepot. He used to be an advertiser in OGR magazine.
You may need thin type flywheels. When I attempted to power an MTH Scaleking F3 - The flywheels hit the top of body, I ended up using Williams F3 motors.
Here's an Atlas GP35 dummy - powered from a Williams GP9, I ended up using the Williams trucks & sideframes because I couldn't find the power transfer gear for the Atlas at the time.
Also, there are two lengths of worm gears on the flywheel motors. I think the six axle had the longer gear, not 100% though.
I think the power transfer gear is the key to making it work. The Atlas dummys come with geared trucks, so the power transfer gear from the motor to the gears on the trucks is the critical connection. I guess if I'm lucky the MTH transfer gear will be the same. Don't know if the education with the tinkering will be worth the expense involved. Only thing I know for sure is when you dive off the high board, you better be sure there is water in the pool.
