wife found a MTH 30-79068 operating box car with the shoes on the side of the truck.

is there a way to operate this car on atlas track and what would I need?

is there a way to have the door stay open, if I can not get an operating track section?

is there a way to open the door without the track section?

thanks.

Yes, you need a set of Atlas control rails.

Not to the best of my knowledge without breaking the door mechanism.

You would have to convert the car to TMCC operation, possibly using an Electric Railroad Mini Commander board, and then use a TMCC command base and Cab-1 to control it. The advantage is that you could then operate the car anywhere on the layout, even while moving at a high rate of speed.

I've converted several of these cars that way.

Barry (or whoever is familiar with these cars)

I have a closely related question.I have one of the Premier operating reefers that I will be using on a tubular track layout, so I can't use the Realtrax operating section or add-on rails like the Atlas. I plan to use OTC lockons to operate the car. Is this car wired so that (a) the current passes from one shoe to the other, as in most Lionel operating cars, or is it wired so (b) the current runs from one shoe through the operating mechanism and back to the common rail, like the barrel car? If (a) I need two OTC lockons; if (b), I only need one.

Thanks.
