I am working on a MTH steam locomotive Part Number # 20-3122-1
In the tender, there are two small copper wound coils that stand side by side one of them has burned up.
I assume that I will replace the complete board.
Can anyone recommend a good parts source, also where can I find exploded parts diagrams with part names and part numbers.

That engine has a 3 volt PS2 board. If the only thing that's toasted is the toroid, you might get a part number from MTH. If there's more going on than the toasted toroid, you might get MTH to sell you a replacement board. Note that what you see as one board is actually two different boards, plugged together. One retails for $80 and the other for $120.

No, not at the component level.
If you cooked a toroid coil, it's pretty difficult to believe there isn't more damage on the board! Those usually outlast the semiconductors around them.

Here is a photo as you can see the top torold is burnt also the pink wire at 11oclock.
I'll call MTH directly and see if I may buy only the torold.
Do you know if there is a member or a shop that specializes in repairing and testing these boards?

Any tech with a PS2 test fixture and a known, good board can test the boar to see if one or both boards have issues. However, I know of no one outside of MTH itself that advertises component-level repairs.
Rudy, First. MTH Web does list the exploded diagrams for product they sell, also the sound files and instruction manuals. The caveat is that not all products have the information posted, and unfortunately many of the newer ones do not.
MTH does teach component level repairs to the techs during their course, and components are available to be purchased, but only a select group of items. Additionally, I have found items through the major electronic parts.
The wire that is damaged looks like the hot wire from the battery. If this became grounded to the coil, you may not have any board damage beyond the coil. Since the source of the high current was the battery directly and not supplied through the board. Does the engine work? That top board is the Power Supply board which retails for $80.

If this is a pink not red wire, then that is not the battery. Looks like it is heading towards the MUX board.
Does sound like the motor may be shorting or shorted.
Does the board start up now and function other than the motor running?
If it does, then testing the board will validate that all board functions are good. Then you can repair the pink wire, and test/replace the motor. The torrid may still function just has the plastic melted.
If the board is not working in the engine, you do need to test it on the testor to validate that it isn't the tender wiring.

Again thank you for your time.
The pink (just a dab of liquid tape will repair it) wires along with a black wire plug into the top board, then they each run to a pickup roller to gain power from the track.

Every thing works, as it should with the exception of the motor, which will not start with out help and will draw over 10 amps tripping the breaker on the transformer.
No Tec here would need to send it somewhere for testing.

You can test the motor by isolating one lead and connecting a DC power supply to it. Run it at each polarity and observe the current it draws in each direction. On the bench with the wheels free, it should draw less than an amp unless you crank the voltage way up.
