So I'm working on my MTH 20-3000-1 UP Challenger and now can't get the drive rods to stay on (they keep popping off this one wheel). Please see pictures below.
The piece on the top of the picture below that the screw screws into keeps coming out of the wheel for some reason. All rods are lined up properly. Is there a spacer or something that's supposed to go around the piece the screw goes in? Any and all help appreciated.

That center insert that is threaded needs to be pressed back in wheel with a strong loc-tite to keep it in place. G
I agree with George, locktite the stud back in the wheel. just be careful that no locktite gets into the crankpin cutouts

Sorry, first time messing with a steamer.
They are the 4 cutout where the eccentric crank pins fit in to time the valve motion. The slots cut in the wheel. You don't want locktite in those.
Chuck, based on the picture above, am I missing a piece here? I see the 4 cutouts on the wheel but don't see anything that would go in them. The stud I have has no flanges or anything. Maybe that's why it keeps popping out?
I think I need to see a parts diagram. Unfortunately, MTH doesn't have one available. I'm wondering if subsequent models made in later years use the same configuration? If so, maybe I could try to find an MTH parts diagram for a newer model and go from there?
there should be 4 tabs on the crank that goes into the driver.
The top piece, in your lower photo, needs to be pressed and glued into the wheel. Loc-tite for sleeves and bushings should hold it. Clean the hole in the wheel and the part that gets pressed in with alcohol to remove any oil that may be there before hand.
Chuck, do you happen to have a pic of these tabs on the crank that goes into the driver? Sorry but I'm new to these part names and I'm having no luck finding any references online anywhere.
If I can't find anything else out, I'll go with your recommendation Dave and Loctite it in there. That's kinda my last resort as it sounds semi-permanent.

Ps.. I found this exploded parts diagram very helpful. It only has a handful of diesel/steamer locomotives, but as you know, many of these use common parts. Just thought I'd link it for all.
