ABOUT THE PREMIER O SCALE AC4400 DIESEL LOCOMOTIVE

From the dawn of dieselization through its first six decades, virtually every American diesel locomotive used DC traction motors. By the early 1990s, however, a series of technological advances allowed designers to tap the inherent superiority of AC traction — namely, the ability of an AC motor to start a heavier load than a DC motor, with the same prime mover. The superior adhesion of AC power touched off a new horsepower race because, with the same number of wheels, AC traction could put more horsepower on the rails.

Two years behind rival EMD, General Electric entered the AC traction business in June 1993 with the AC4400CW — 4400 horsepower, "C" for 3-axle trucks, and "W" for wide North American cab. The new engine was basically an AC version of the Dash 9-44CW introduced the same year. The key external difference between the two engines is the large box behind the cab on the left side of the AC 4400CW, which houses much of the AC traction electronics.

Although General Electric’s AC power arrived on the scene later, its AC engines have outsold those made by EMD. One reason may be GE’s use of one inverter bank per traction motor, a design that allows the crew to cut out a single malfunctioning motor and still retain more than 80% of a locomotive’s function. On a comparable EMD AC-powered engine, an entire truck has to be taken offline if one of its three motors fails.

One area of weakness for GE was its high adhesion trucks, which were generally acknowledged to be inferior to EMD’s steerable radial truck. Later model AC4400CWs feature GE’s own version of a steerable truck, which improves adhesion on curves.

Now you can bring the brute strength of the AC4400CW to your own freight operations. This model offers the industry-leading features you expect in a Premier diesel: awesome sounds, superb detailing, see-through body grilles, a wealth of added-on details, and smooth operation at any throttle setting from a crawl to high-speed mainline service.

Though I'm sure the demand isn't high enough, I wish the 22-nnnnn-2 versions were available, or in the alternative, the wheel sets and replacement pilots. for the new engines.

Matt,

I agree. In the past MTH was very supportive of Three Rail Scale that way. And I’m about worn out doing conversions. If MTH ever offers these AC4400s in the versions delivered to UP in the 90s, though (not the SP repaints offered here) I’d spring for one or two. I dabble a little in UP from that era, and that’s why I picked up this CNW version to run with some UP power. (And yes, I just recently finished the pilot conversion). Maybe next time MTH can run this variation in UP with no flag or lightning stripes:

Hi Rich.

I picked up the most recent one with Proto-3 and scale wheels with the plan of fixing the pilots on the Proto-2 powered/dummy pair I have. Ran it with scale wheels in place at AGHR. It's in a stack in my garage at the new place. I recently picked up scale pilots to install on the hi-rail AC4400's and have a set of scale replacement wheels.

Like the pilot detailing you did. It looks like you replaced the snow plow and hoses.

and I like it too!

looks like they announced a run with scale wheels in 2019. That appears to have been cancelled. Maybe they will do scale wheels if we beg?

I'd prefer a Southern Pacific (like : 22-20804-2 | MTH ELECTRIC TRAINS (mthtrains.com))  just because I don't have any.

I always end up taking what I can get. So maybe a BNSF to replace one that I sold.

I'd say CSX but everyone here says I have too many.

According to one of the CSX rosters online, 602 is a CW44AC. But I think it is one of the convertible units that was meant to be CW60AC, but shipped with 4400hp. I am thinking that someone at MTH didn’t do all their homework and, while the 602 is 4400hp, the car body is of the 6000.

I’ll be honest, if I can get one new for a really good price, and it has the gold lettering (csx’s greatest paint scheme imo ), I’ll probably bite.
