I got an email from MTH announcing SD50s for five different railroads. I don’t have any SD50s.

I like the looks of the RBMN units and I am tempted to pre-order. But I have an MTH RBMN SD40 that I rarely use because I don’t like the shrill blower whine. Yes, I know I can turn engine sound down or off, but what fun is that. I also know that a different sound file can be installed, but I don't want to bother with that.  Though I like the looks of the RBMN SD50, I don’t want another loco that doesn’t get used because of the blower sound.

Anyone have an MTH Premier SD50? How is the engine sound? Shrill blower whine, or no?

MTH is offering the SD50 in two cab numbers for each of the five railroads. For RBMN its 5014 and 5029. Also wondering if anyone knows the story behind why the 5029 was parted out.

Thanks Clem and Rick.

I’ll try the Labor Up button on my SD40, but if you have to hold the button the whole time you run it, that’s not gonna do it for me.

The problem I think is that the sound files are recorded from real size locos, but the small speakers in model trains are better at reproducing high frequencies.  Models of naturally aspirated engines all sound fine to me.  And whether the real loco has a turbocharger or supercharger does not seem to determine which models have high pitch blower sounds.  Possibly some sound files were modified to filter out high frequencies.  Possibly some were recorded when the blower was not loaded.  Some of my best sounding locos are the E8 and GP38.  The worst ones to my ear are the F7 and SD40.

The real SD50s may sound fine, but that may not translate to the model.  I don’t know.  That’s what I’m trying to find out.

He can change the sound file and pick one he likes. If the turbo sound isn’t his cup of tea, find a N/A diesel file and load it. Of course, be wary of chain files that could affect lighting, etc. There are aftermarket sites you can play around with files that would allow you to accomplish this, and it’s not like it’s an ancient Chinese secret,…..If this is real problem for you, but you like the models, then customizing sound files is something you probably should learn to do, as just about every modern diesel locomotive is forced induction in some sort of way, ……Then you can become self sufficient, and not rely on bandaids to get you by……

Doh! I used YouTube before to find a sound file.  Not sure why I didn’t think about it for the SD50.  So far, I haven’t found one where the youtuber isn’t blowing the horn or ringing the bell when loco is running track speed.  But it sounds like the loco has a blower whine.  I’ll look more when I am done a honey do painting job.

Pat – I’m too lazy to learn how to replace sound files.  And my friendly neighborhood ASC Certified Tech is only 30 minutes from me.  John replaced the file in an F7 for me.  I picked an E8 file that sounds great but seems funny to have two diesels start up when you push the start up button.
