My R2 proto 2 green battery premier steam engine will add to DCS and operate normal but it is not found on track the next time I go to use it. Any ideas? I did put a BCR in it. Thanks. This forum is great.

Test in conventional. If the BCR won’t charge, the battery charge circuit is not working or the charge wire does not have continuity. If the battery/BCR does not have sufficient charge, the address will not be saved. PS2 5v boards do have battery charge circuit problems and their is a fix, but it is very hard to install and rarely works.
Thanks Jon. The engine has minmal sound too. Have to put ear to tender to hear it. This engine was new old stock. It showed no signs of ever bring used. The speaker is sluffing off parts of the magnet. Thought thay might be sound issue. I did unplug the tender board connections and plug them back in but haven't tested it since. The Proto 2 boards must be under the boiler. None in tender.
Oh. I need to mention it runs fine other than these 2 problems.
If that speaker is flaking do not run that engine until the speaker is replaced!
I checked the DC voltage at the capacitor with the Z4000 set to 20 volts and the engine idling in DCS mode. It was 10 volts. Seems like it has charging power.
Agree with the above comments. Replace the speaker. Match the Ohms rating and speaker dimensions. If the wattage is off a bit, that won't be a problem.
Agree w/JonG about the charging circuit. For testing purposes, you can substitute a 9v Alkaline battery. Do NOT leave it installed! If the address stays, then the BCR is not getting charged.

The speaker could be the whole issue, but it's at least a mandatory replacement NOW! A simple voltmeter test across the battery with power on the track will tell you if the battery is getting charged, the voltage will be increasing.
There is 10 volts DC at battery. I ordered a new speaker. Should be here Saturday. Thanks
Well gentleman I unplugged the speaker and the engine stays active in DCS remote and powers up in Start Up. May have dodged the bullet! Waiting on new speaker. See my next engine message.
Yep, that speaker can kill the boards if it has an internal short to the coil. Been there, replaced a few boards where the speaker was the culprit.
I doubt the speaker did that but maybe. Odd for the 5V board with a good battery or BCR with voltage present at the terminal to not store to memory on shutdown. You may have an intermittent break on the harness since board is in engine, and battery/bcr in tender. G
I'm going to try resoldering connections on cable board connection in tender. If one of them is broken it would cause some of this. This engine is new old stock. Been sitting in box for 20 yrs. Hard to believe anything terminal could be wrong with it. BCR is charging just no sound and it will not stay registered in DCS. I can return it to where it came from. Already talked to them about it.

Actually, with the 5V board, it's not hard at all for me to believe the board set has crapped out. More than once I've seen a similar situation with the old 5V board set.
Guys I replaced the speaker in the R2 and the sound is back.
Haha! It never ends. Now my MUX board is causing lights to flicker when smoke is on. I understand a fix exists and not too difficult but I think I'll let Mike the MTH service tech at Roundhouse South do it.
Not "too difficult" is a relative term. If it needs the full fix, it's a number of pages and mods to several boards and some wiring.
Are the procedures or diagrams available to hobbyists for this fix? Having trouble finding someone that wants to do it so I may have to attempt it myself.
