What does it sound like? Is it the sound used to arm the Protocoupler? If so, I have my 1st one to die. I was setting it up for my Christmas train and turned it on to hear this, and it had already been going around the tree for 10+ minutes. I was not happy.

The three clanks are the same clank as you hear when you arm the coupler, there are just three of them.
If you're hearing that, the board needs to be reset, MTH tech have the chip to do the job.
If you have the old white battery, throw it away and get a new one. This time of year we get to see (hear) lots of 3 clank situations as engines come out for Christmas. From time to time someone will say the white battery looks good and refuse to spend a few extra bucks. I walk away from those jobs. If you trust someone to un scramble your board, you should trust his judgement and go with the new battery. As a rule, most are happy to get the job done.
Yep, just as stated, CLANK, CLANK, CLANK. Good news is this is the fault that the MTH MAKE PS chip can resolve. Sold to public. New battery and use the chip to restore. Put old chip back in. G
It's got the green battery, that's the 1st thing I do when I buy a PS-1 locomotive. It just caught me off guard as I've run this locomotive recently, and it had been running that afternoon when it all of a sudden did this. Guess it's about time I bought that reset chip set.

great price too only $19.99
Replace the battery with a BCR no more problems ever, I have them in all my engines PS-1 engines it's a must do ! VERY IMPORTANT to follow the instructions after installing a BCR
Never say never. Everyone needs to go with what works for them. Like Steve pointed out, read the instructions if you use a BCR. I had a guy bring me a PS-3 diesel with a complaint that it takes a long time to warm up. I asked if he read the directions and he told me he has had trains from 1949 to present and does not need to read any book. The PS-3 engine was fine. The problem was the owner not the train.
