MTH PS 2.0 Circuit board problem

The specific component that burned is circled in red in the images below

From the looks of it. You have a 5v board. It is most likely DOA. Also it looks like from the posted photos that one of the CAPs has also bulged. Did you try a reset and recover engine with your DCS remote?

That is indeed a 60 cent transistor (FET) for the smoke-fan.

IF (that's a big IF!) you are capable of working on these tiny components, I suppose it's worth a shot trying a DIY repair.  If so, first remove the burned component to expose the 3 rectangular solder pads on the board.  You shouldn't have to remove the boards but obviously be very fastidious about not splattering soldering or whatever.  With the component removed, you can power up the engine to see if it still just clicks or whether it actually starts up.  That is, the engine should function without that part installed...it's just the smoke fan won't work.  If the board is still non-functional with this part removed, then something else was damaged and I'd stop.  But if the board is functional (less smoke fan of course), then there's a good chance soldering in a new 352A will put you back in business.  And if you do choose to order parts, I'd also order the part above it (which you have circled too) labeled SS.  That is the 22 cent companion transistor (FET) as it takes 2 transistors to drive the smoke fan.  Components can be damaged yet have no visible indications.

But seriously, component-level repair with these tiny components is not for everyone.  So I too highly recommend contacting forum member GGG.

PS-2 5V Look like a fet burned.  I would not power up until it can be looked at by tech.  When a short or damage occurs, continual powering can result in more damage or killing the board.  Especially PS-2 5V.

Thank you all for your help.  I have been in touch with a few members and have a few options.  In thinking through the issue, it turns out if you switch off the smoke unit, the engine still has forward and reverse capability, sound, both horn and whistle.  It looks as if the board just burned out where the fan motor was controlled. 

In the end I know this is because I skipped the step in the online video about disconnecting the power feed from the motor to the board PRIOR to using a battery to spin oil into the motor. 

In attempting to quiet the motor I have at least succeeded in getting a perfectly quiet one by having to turn off smoke!

Searched around the site and did not see a step by step procedure for removal of a 5 volt PS-2 board, so I took photos.  Turns out to not be so difficult but from the initial mess of wires, one might not have thought that to be the case.

In the end the circuit board was packaged and shipped to forum member GGG.  Forum member stan2004 above was correct in identifying 352A and SS as the bad components.  GGG as able to repair the board which I am very grateful for.  It was very impressive work.

Finally, after having originally screwed up the board messing around with the fan motor, the engine is back together and ready to run, leaving me with a new found respect for the intricacies of these engines, and also the expertise of the forum members.

You're lucky, most 5V boards don't come back.
