I've got an older MTH PS2 UP 844 Northern that has a problem...I think.
If you run it in DCS with the smoke on...it stumbles every time it chuffs and puffs smoke.
If you shut the smoke off it runs normally and smoothly.
What is wrong...and can it be repaired relatively inexpensively...

Bad ground or bad PV5 connection. I would try resoldering the pin connections on the 10-pin socket in the locomotive.
This can also be a bad fan motor which effects the 5V PS and causes tach issues if that is what you mean by stumble. G
I just repaired a Y3 with the same issue, it was indeed a bad smoke fan motor as George states. However, the wiring is certainly a real possibility, there's even a published fix for older steam with the 5V board to add grounding and some other mods to prevent the lights from flickering when the smoke is on.
I had a couple engines doing this very odd behavior, …..one would flicker lights, the other did dumb stuff like gibsonman’s does, …..both were bad smoke motors,….George diagnosed both locomotives,……I wanna say both were PS2 3V engines,….

He has motion issues based on what he said. So I do not think it is wiring of the Mux fix that 5V boards needed. No mention of flickering light though markers could with a bad fan motor. Never had a mux issue with the UP Northern and the first was a 5V board. Now, that engine is HIGHLY susceptible to failing 5V board. I have upgraded over a dozen of them. G
