One of the joys of buying a new house is the basement that comes with it. Not my first basement of course, but the joy that this basement space is shared only with a sump pump and a hot water heater. Another joy is unpacking all of the bags, boxes and tubs filled with many long forgotten trains purchased over the years.

Some of the tubs have been moved several times without being opened. One such tub has a brand new MTH Railking Florida East Coast F-3 AA Diesel Set RK-2007LP, still in box. I vaguely remember buying it.

The box shows also shows that the DCRU comes from QSI and it is equipped with Proto Sound. Checking the MTH website says it was in the 1997 Spring Catalog.

I will assume that this is PS1? So, where do I start besides lube and grease? Do I charge it on the track or get the battery eliminator?

I have the manual and it is strong on operating, but weak on the shortcomings of PS1.

Before you run it, remove old battery, and replace with new 9v NIMH 220mAh battery. Make sure battery is fully charged first, by 16 to 18 hours in neutral with track power at 12 volts. Better to use battery charger from Walmart or? Best is a BCR. Follow MTH instructions for start up. Also if BCR installed , set engine on track, apply 10-11 volts for one minute to charge BCR. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice Chris - I do have the BCR from J&W that I will use.

All of my previous experiences with MTH Railking have been with PS2 or rolling stock.

Sean, congrats on the New basement. I don’t know what to tell you about getting a Ps1 loco ready for start up, since I don’t own any. However, I think it’s wonderful that a Florida East Coast engine from the land of no basements gets to run free once again in your new basement.  My Florida based collection, relegated to operating in a spare bedroom, envíes him.  Enjoy!
