Hi GUYZ,

Just purchased a new MTH R&N Pacific SKU 20-3811-1, put it on the tracks, running it with DCS, programmed fine, stack smoke is working good, as are all other features save the whistle steam.  I added smoke fluid under the dome, blew down the hole and when I use whistle on remote nothing comes out.  Nothing comes out even if I use the quillable whistle too.  I did a reprogram on the engine and whistle and nothing.  Is there anything else to look for?  I just purchased this from a Forum sponsor, should I contact him to send it back?  Thanks in advance for advice.

Also, caution, I just checked your sound file, and as I suspected, you too are a victim of the bad sound file problem of the Heavy Pacifics all released with steaming whistle have a flaw where if you enable quilling whistle SPW and then play the PFA sequence, just before the engine takes off and plays the 2 toots for forward there will be an ear shattering beep or noise from the speaker. If you just have the whistle in normal non-quilling mode and start the sequence, it hopefully does not invoke the ear shattering beep.

Again, downloaded your sound file https://mthtrains.com/20-3811-1 and checked that it does have a bad segment 241.

I've tried contacting MTH, I've tried getting dealers involved. I personally have 2 engines and $2600 tied up in this mess.

Even @Allan Miller has one of these engines and even though he hasn't said it, the sound file certainly checks out to have the bug

MTH has had since I reported this on 7/28/2022 to acknowledge it, and then actually commit to doing something about it. Meanwhile dealers keep selling these and shipping them and honestly, if push comes to shove and people get angry and return bad programmed engines at dealer expense, this is going to be one heck of a mess.

So yeah, if you cannot get steaming whistle to work, and you now know about this sound problem- you have plenty of justification to send that thing back.

Thanks VERNON for the info on the whistle steam.  I will try it again tomorrow.  I thought it worked like the Legacy steam engines by just tooting the whistle.  I ll let you know how it goes.

Nope, sorry to say, you've been spoiled by Lionel's implementation. I too have a fleet of Legacy and Visionline.

I will say this, in the app using the WIU+TIU, whistle steam and quilling whistle are far more intuitive and a better experience compared to using the remote.

And just a clarification, again, you can just enable FSW steaming whistle, not enable quilling whistle SPW off, and the whistle steam blows with the normal whistle button. But the thing is, you have to first enable it via DCS command- as by default it's off. There's no physical switch like a Lionel and as you know, a Lionel if the switch is on, unless you turned off all smoke TMCC/Legacy, it's on by default.

It might come down to patent wars, naming wars, whatever. That's why MTH has to call it "Steaming Whistle" and Lionel calls it whistle steam.
