MTH REAL TRAX ITAD #40-1028

I recently acquired a large amount of MTH Real Trax and there is one item I'm not familiar with. It's part # is 40-1028 and it's called Infrared -------- something. I don't know it's function or how to hook it up. Can anyone out there help with what it's supposed to do and how to hook it up. Comments are really appreciated. Thanks,
