I have an MTH GP-38, PS2 on which the rear coupler will not latch. It opens the other day and never closed again.....Doesn't matter if the loco is powered or not. Is there something in there I can tweak, or do I need to replace?. Where can I buy if I need a new one?

They're standard couplers, probably a 2" one in the GP38. MTH has them on their parts site.
Thanks John. I'll get right on that, since its one of my favs.
Another question, if I may. I have an Atlas GP 60 with TMCC that I bought last year. Ithas that "run away at full speed " thing I've seen complaints about here. Makes it essentially useless to me. Can you convert to PS-2 or 3 and what would the cost be? Or maybe just fix it som I can use it with TMCC? I tried engine resets 2 or 3 times, but it only runs "normally" for 3-5 minutes and then it's off to the races.
The Atlas probably has the TAS EOB. The top suspect is the tach reader, the wires break at the base and you're off to the races.
Ohhhhh....thanks John, I'll certainly check that out!
John, see pics. There are indentations in the vinyl jackets but doesn't seem to the level the conductors would be severed....or are they? Also, solder joints look to be intact.
Thought?? Thanks, Bob

It's not the wires, they clearly look in good shape.
Check the spacing of the sensor to the flywheel. It should be from about 0.8mm to 1.0mm from the flywheel. If it is, put the engine on the track and power it up without the shell. Turn the flywheel and see if the LED on the tach board blinks for each stripe.
Mmmmmm....that seems to work perfectly, at least by hand! Blinked every time.

Well, that's saying either the tach board output is bad, the wiring through the tether is bad, or the TAS EOB board is bad. My first step would be to look at the tether, that's the most likely suspect.
I unplugged the sensor, cleaned up the whole inside with electronic cleaner and some air, plugged everything back in and it's been OK. Ran it for an hour without it taking off, which is the longest I've ever run it. I'll me keeping a close eye on it, though!!
Thanks for all your help, John!
Loose connection somewhere, hopefully you nailed it.
You cannot even imagine how long I've waited to make this video. They're finally playing nice, many thanks to you!. Any chance of getting smoke in that Weaver, or is that a dream?
