If the sounds don't play for a few seconds when power is interrupted or shut down, your battery is dead.  If you have the MTH charger, plug it into the diesel or tender socket and charge for 8-12 hours.  Otherwise, turn the sounds and smoke off (annoying) and power a track for 8-12 hours, turn the sounds back up and repeat the about test.  If sounds don't play for a few seconds after shutdown, then the battery will not hold a charge.  The locos with PS2 boards without a charging jack or the round jack use the 8.4 volt battery and the ones with the 2-pin use the 2.4 volt battery.

So with, say, 12V on the track the PS2 engine sounds and lights are ON.  You briefly press the Z4000 DIRection button and the sounds continue but the lights turn OFF as long a DIR is held down.  You repeatedly press the DIR button and this behavior repeats but engine does not move.  Does that describe the behavior?

Have you tried a conventional reset using the button sequence of Whistle/Horn and Bell?  Perhaps your engines are locked in Neutral.  If so, a factory reset will unlock this allowing Forward and Reverse motion.  This sequence of 1 W plus 5 B is described in each PS2 manual but can be tricky to get the timing just right.  Here's a video showing this factory reset procedure.  Note that you want to hear the double-toot acknowledgement sound from the engine.

G, sounds to me like he does this test trying to get the engine to move. He stated the engine restarts when he tries to switch directions.

What battery are you using when you say that it happens "even with  a new charged 8.4volt battery. "

Is this an off brand battery? (not MTH?) How do you charge them?

These engines need the battery to come out of neutral. Somethings wrong that they restart when lowering the handle.
