Picked these guys up from the hobby store yesterday. They're really nice, but not good pullers. Wheels slipping a lot as the train goes through curves. I think the powered unit is just too light. Anyone else having similar issues?

Steven,
Engines sure looks nice.
Also very nice layout.
Good luck, John
I'm not sure the problem is the powered unit. Check out how well the dummy rolls freely. I suspect could be the real issue. At least with the few MTH dummies I owned, I referred to them as lead sleds. I seemed to expend more pulling power dragging the dummy than I did just pulling the rest of the train.

How many cars are you pulling?
The Non-Powered RailKing RS27 diesel that I have will roll fine if you OIL every single rolling point. That is something that some people might forget because they have no motors. OIL all the points that have contact and need to move.
Lube the gears on the powered unit. Forgetting to add lube grease often has caused MTH diesels to run slowly.

~25. I lubed both right out of the box.
25 cars from Atlas O or Lionel or MTH or Weaver?
The Atlas O cars are the heaviest.
MTH have good weight.
Lionel cars are a variety of weights.
Weaver cars need to be weighted down often.

Even mix of all, plus one or two Kline and Intermountain
Are the traction tires oiled and spinning around.
Traction tires can work lose and come-off easily if they are too old.

I really think 15-18 cars might be better, I think putting too many cars have caused the wheel slippages
