hey guys! I just got this bad boy but it’s been a hassle so far. So at first it wouldn’t get out of neutral but that was thanks to a dead battery. SO battery replaced and then the front motor wouldn’t turn so I took it all apart and greased it all up and now it runs but it seems rather slow... all my other diesels go quite fast at the same voltage that I give this one and it’s much slower. This is my only P. S. 2 engine so maybe it’s just built to go slow or binding gears? Any ideas?

MTH's PS 2 engines have speed control even when running conventional.  To accomplish speed control, there needs to be power available when going up a hill or around curves so the engine runs as though it is getting two or three volts less than what is available on the track.  This reserve  is then used when engine tries to slow down because of the extra power needed to  go up a hill or a short curve.

It is a great feature that I think you will enjoy.

Happy railroading,

Don

Manual suggests every time.  I suppose could be considered a bother but then again it only takes a couple of seconds!

You’re a handy man! Thank you. I’ll just live it since it’ll bug me to do it each time. Also, do you know when this was built by chance? The manual has Year 2007 on it but the MTH website said year 2001....

If you enter "SD24" on the MTH website, it shows versions made ~2001 and ~2007.  There are different manuals which can be downloaded by clicking through to a specific model number.  I take it you don't have the original MTH box or whatever showing the model number (20-2759-1 for example).

If the 2007 manual you have physically came with the engine I'd think you have the later version...or as shown in the different manuals, look under the chassis at the battery charger port.  Is it round or square?   They are two different internal rechargeable battery type - but battery maintenance is a separate issue.  The speed-control on/off method would NOT have changed between the two versions.

It’s round, so I must have the 2001 Version no wonder the battery was shot
