I do MTH repairs.  If you need a complete board set, you're looking in the $250 ballpark.  OTOH, it could be something else.  What vintage is this locomotive?  What's the exact MTH stock number?

Gunrunner is right. I just took a MTH Mallet to JR Junction in Syracuse NY and both boards were fried. $270 later!!!!!!!$$$$$$$$$$$$

The newer 3V board set can usually be repaired, or at the worst only one board needs replacement.  The older 5V set is much less repairable.

Thanks so much for the info. It's a  20-3048-1 from 2000. Pretty sure they are fried...brunt smell in boiler. Thanks for the info and offer.....but I have a good DCU I may just throw in it.

Dave,  That is too nice an engine to do the DCRU.  I can repair it for a better price, and even use the Flash Board with Quillable Whistle.  My e-mail is in my profile.  George

If you smell the burnt smell from the 5V boards, you very likely are looking at the total board replacement scenario.  The diodes that cook are usually in the middle of the board stack and impossible to get to.

Two fir two.......my brand new MTH DAP 2-10-4 J1a is DOA TOO!!!!! This is really getting old. I'd say it was just me if not for the fact I have bought a number of MTH locomotives for pennies on the dollar after owners fried them. At first I thought it was through misuse or abuse on owners part. But across the board PS1 to PS3 I see lots of DOA locos. This makes 3 MTH locos on my bench dead. My little Christmas loco fried after I forgetfully ran it under the tree with my Lionel transformer.....after 3 minutes DEAD! It really makes me want to strip the boards from all my locos and run DC conventional....did it in HO for 30 years with ZERO issues.

Looks like the Q2 will get Dalee boards as I wanted the J1a and did not have the $300 to fix it and buy the J1a.....I am not making good decisions.....
