I have a pre-2010 TIU and my friend would like to perform the same functions that I have shown him. When I look at the used market (Ebay & Trainz) I see that there is now an "L" model that was offered later than 2010. Can anyone tell me if the "L" will run older DCS locos and will the older model TIU run newer DCS locos. I've been in the hobby for decades, but never knew anything about an "L" model TIU! I really enjoy my DCS locos!

The "L" has enhanced signal strength thru a better chip. Both models run all the engines the same way.
You should load the latest DCS release to run the latest engines. That will ensure better and full operation.

Any version of the TIU will run any DCS locomotive. The only caveat is that for best results, you need to update the software to the latest 6.1 version.
Thank you both for your answers! Is it still possible to update the early TIUs. Also, it appears that the newer TIUs use a USB instead of the 9 pin for the computer interface. I can't believe the prices for the TIU and controller!
Yes, all TIUs from MTH can be updated to 6.1.
The Version "L" TIUs have a USB port. The earlier ones need to use the serial port, so an adapter maybe needed for newer computers.
I would recommend using 10amp (car blade type) fuses before each channel of the TIU to protect the channels as recommended by Ray's Electric Trains to me years ago.
It's easy to swap out a blown external fuse and not have to tear into the TIU.
