Well, I was ready to update my remote and plugged a standard 4 conductor cord into the TIU with no problem, but the other end is too large for the remote. Now I have a trim to fit job. Who else has run into this problem?

Sounds like you don't have the correct cord.
The instructions specifically state to use a standard 4 conductor phone cord which I have done and both ends are the same and fit the TIU, but not the remote.
I agree with Eng-Joe. I didn't have to modify anything for either end on my phone cord. Something isn't right somewhere.
Is it a curly phone cord? You need the cord from the hand set (microphone & receiver) to the phone.
You gentlemen are correct. I had the wrong cord and fortunately, my wife saved an old hand set that I could rob. I never realized that the hand held to the base cord had slightly smaller connectors compared to the base to the wall outlet cord.
Thanks for the heads up,
George
Not a "standard phone cord", a "standard handset cord"! There is a difference! The handset cord has a narrower profile, do NOT try to cram the modular RJ14 cord into the remote! The handset RJ22 4-wire cord is what you need.
I see you discovered it before I could get my reply in.
…. and make sure you plug into the correct remote input on the TIU!!!
There is only one remote input, but you do NOT want to plug into the AIU jack!

I have tried to!
That frequently doesn't end well Joe! I've stuffed it in there, but realized before I applied power that wasn't where it belongs.
Glad I'm not the only one trying to pull it in the wrong place. LOL
If a screw-up can be done, I'm sure you'll find lots of folks that have done it.
