If you had to repair an MTH traditional tinplate engine, could you use reproduction prewar parts to repair motors,gears,airwhistle? or are there differences which you would have to rely on MTH for parts?
I've used MTH parts to fix prewar engines, so I see no reason the reverse wouldn't be true as well. One big caveat: I've only done this with Lionel. I have no idea how interchangeable the parts are with Flyer or pre-Lionel Ives.
I don't think the air whistle parts are interchangeable, but can't be sure on that. The MTH whistle bodies are plastic and I think they are copies of a later Lionel version.
It depends on the part(s) and the item. Some MTH items look just like originals, but are built quite differently. It's always worth it to try, but be prepared for it not to work every time.
