the battery is usually in the tender take the tender cover off and you should see it!  the mth documentation usually has pictures of the battery location!

look at page 17 show exactly here battery is located white battery DO NOT LEAVE OLD white BATTERY IN ENGINE REPLACE WITH A new one, you can  temporarily  install a 9  volt battery to test engine but do not leave regular white battery in engine you need rechargeable battery 8.4 volt from mth or other same type rechargeable battery ! p.s page 17 shows battery picture inside tender!

That's exactly like I thought. But, I just took off the tender shell, no battery.   It's in the engine. So, I'll be taking the engine apart tomorrow.  Nothing is ever easy. It looks real complicated.

JC let me know be glad to help you in any way possible was the battery in the engine a White one ? if so remove immediately and do what i suggested or replace with 8.4 rechargeable battery mth sells them and i also have them, in  stock and there other batteries also available from many places like Amazon etc !
