Have the above steam engine model # 30-1147-1 with proto-sound.  Two problems:

1.  Having difficulty getting battery out of tender.  Cannot get it out of the bracket.  Does the bracket come off some how?

2.  When idling the engine makes sounds.  However, when running there are no engine sounds (adjusted volume still does not work).  Is this a battery problem?

Any assistance would be appreciated.   Thanks, Daviddp

This is a Proto Sound engine and TIU not needed for reset.  Reset is done with transformer throttle and whistle button.

Picture of battery would help.  Sometimes you need to loosed the PS-1 board brackets if the battery is under the board.  There also is double side tape that may be making removal hard.

For resetting chuff sounds, you need to press whistle 2 times after you are in reset #18 position.   G

I acquired the same unit (30-1147-1) from a friend last Christmas.  Worked fine then and through this Christmas.  Wanted to go one last run (or three) before putting away.  I now only get 3 "clangs"  I called MTH Cust. Svce.  410-381-2580 then 2 then 1  Spoke with a technician who was very helpful he actually asked to hear the sound at power-up.  Upon hearing the 3 "clangs" he advised me that I needed a new battery which is included in a kit with a chip puller, a de-scrambler chip and step by step instructions.  I did find that the puller (of course) and de-scrambler chip are reusable. $29.95 and no additional shipping.

you have to make sure your battery is in good condition.  don't let ir drop below 7.5 volts.  you can install a bcr from j&l electronics this is a capacitier in a 9 volt battery case.  when you turn the engine on let it sit there for 1 minute this will charge the capacitor up in the battery case.  you will be good to go!

That's J & W Electronics.

So even though the cap. will drain while engine is "laid up" stored, recharging the cap. for 1 min will prevent the chip from getting "locked up/scrambled" again?

Correct, the problem doesn't occur when power is first applied and the locomotive is still in reset. It's when you try to leave reset by pushing the direction button to run the locomotive. Just make sure you charge the BCR for a solid minute at 10 volts each time you power up the locomotive.
