Picked up one of the MTH Imperial Mountains (30-1580-1). Nice engine and would rather not part with it but the wireless drawbar end (under the cab) will come in contact with the trailing truck sides while rounding 0-31 curves. Not enough to short it out but it does arc a slight bit. Anyone experience this and have a way around it? I'd rather not put tape all over the engine. It runs but I'm worried one day it will blow the boards. Hope the problem description makes sense...

Help/suggestions appreciated.

Hi Matt,

There should be a small plastic shield that cover the end of the drawbar and prevents just what you have described.  If your engine is missing the shield contact the MTH Parts Department.  The shield is easy to install with a screw driver.  It's sandwiched between the drawbar and spring on the engine.

Dave,

Shield is there...it contacts on the back where the shield doesn't reach...basically the slat end pointing towards the front of the engine.

Matt,

The 30mm drawbar that comes with it might be too short for your curves. Did you get an extra bar with it? If not, you might have to order a slightly longer drawbar. I found out the hard way that MTH is not shipping them with the ground "spring" or the plastic casing around the drawbar (both of those parts are sized for each drawbar). Even their newly released 3 bar set doesn't come with those parts. I had to cut down the ground "spring" that came with my 50mm and used the casing from the 30.

Matt,

Are you sure that a longer bar won't lessen the contact with the truck? The short bars pivot at quite a large angle when going around short radius curves. I'm also not sure if I was clear about the casing. Yes, there's a clear plastic shield on the end, but there's a black plastic "casing" that snaps around the drawbar. The MTH tech told me it's there to protect the traces in the drawbar from friction by the "ground spring" and derails. That casing is not being shipped with the drawbars. Crazy.
