So Im using the store demo unit to test and learn and I am hving huge issues connecting it to the network. First off it does not work the way the quickstart guide says it does. Mine will boot up and after a bucnh of flashing lights and such i get the power light and the TIU light on. Then I go press the WPS button on the router and then I press it on the WIU and maybe it connects, maybe it doesn't if it doesnt when I repeat the WPS procedure it will connect but if I disconnect power to the WIU it will not reconnect to the router. My router is a netgear WNDR4300. When it connects it works great and running trains is super slick but if I disconnect power it will not reconnect and I will have to reset the WIU and start over. I get the feeling its not supposed to be like this but documentation is non-existent. Ive got 4 on order and if this is how they act I'mm not even going to bother. I know there are a couple of other guys out there that have one, are you ahving any issues with the home network option?

Matt,
Mine "mated" once via WPS and now works every time, regardless of whether the WIU has been off in-between. The way that your WIU and router are working is not typical. My best guess is that either you have a flakey router or the WIU itself is defective.
Once the WIU connects, do you have the knowledge to go into the router and assign the WIU a static (permeant) IP address? This is done by assigning an address outside (typically below) the router's DHCP range to the WIU's MAC address.
If you can do so, that would ensure that the connection gets made every time that the two devices are both powered up.
Have you tried connecting it without the WPS method? Connecting to a laptop and setting it up that way?
My last router was a Netgear, nothing but issues. Now have a Google Onhub and I love it. No WPS though.
That sucks
Matt there is a RESET button on the WIU try holding it down for 10 seconds to reset the device. Also Check the Mode switch to see how you are running the WIU: MTH Mode or HOME. Make sure the switch is set to Home Mode...
Also how far away are you from your router?
I would use your phone and download a Wifi Signal Testing App and see what type of wifi signal you are getting. Where the WIU is located, make sure your not getting a week wifi signal from your router...
You could also test it by directly connecting it to your router with a cat5e network cable... once you know the ip address you can use your browser and log into the WIU's Configuration Page... From there I would set a static IP high. Like 192.168.1.205
Good Luck...

I Love Trains
I have the same issue so instead I use the WIU wifi network and haven't found it to be an inconvenience changing networks when I want to run the trains. For my router the WPS button doesn't exist on the router but I have to connect to the router via IP address and press the WPS button in the web browser. If I lose connection to the WIU on my home network following this procedure always made it work. So tonight I will set a static IP address to the WIU and see if it takes care of it. If not, I'll continue to change networks at love my trains!
Given that by using the "MTH network" I seamlessly address any of multiple WIUs but merely selecting a loco, but (I am told) if using a "home network" one must open "settings" and select another WIU, what would be the advantage of using a home network, besides the ability to leave the trains running while accessing the internet?
Well, when I got home and connected to my Apple router I have had zero problems. I am waiting to try the multiple WIU's on the home network with the Apple router. That test should come about in a couple of weeks. I really dont want to muck up the running of trains by having to switch between the Lionel wifi and the MTH wifi, I want to turn on the layout, wait for everything to connect and run trains, I dont want to monkey around with a bunch of silly little things
I had an old TIU (version 3.1) which, despite trepidation, effortlessly upgraded to 5.0 from the MTH download site. Thank you MTH for making your hardware extensible (even if it involves using an old phone cord)! Hooked up the WIU to my home network (Apple Airport router) and manually set the SSID through the WIU interface (following user guide instructions). Worked like a charm the first time, but then after powering down and power up again, the WIS could no longer find my home network. I needed to go back in through the interface and reconnect to my network. (Similar issue to those reported above). I don't think it is a signal strength issue. I think it might have something to do with setting a fixed IP address, but I am not sufficiently computer savvy to figure this out. In the meantime, I am just running in "MTH network" mode, which is just fine. The iPad app seems great so far. My 7 year old now loves running our layout using the App and it has really rekindled his interest in the trains- well worth the price, I say.
