A friend is having an issue with his MTH Z4000 Transformer. He said that when he shut it down the day before that he had no issues. The next day when he turned on his Z4000 he had an issue. You can't raise the voltage over 9.7 volts (with the left handle) w/o the red circuit breaker light flashing, and then going solid red....plus showing 11 to 13 AMP's... even if the Z4000 is disconnected from track, and TIU. The right handle works fine. What causes this issue...or what might have happened ? Is this repairable ? I would like a little help...

Sounds like an internal short.  Once you hit a certain voltage, the current will flow proportional to the resistance of the short.  If it's not doing this until you get up around 9V, the short might not be a dead short and could be transformer winding.  That would be difficult to repair I think.

he opened it up...everything looked good...disconnected the display wires...reconnected them....still doing the same thing. checked to makes sure wires weren't to close or touching. tried it again....no change...done that 4 more times. on the 5th time...it now works ..like it should....should he trust it ? I told him to take it slow....maybe with a test track..before hooking it back up to his huge layout...with his TIU
