This is my first Way car or caboose reconstruction project. Since nobody makes a CB&Q 4 window steel waycar (built 1930). Inspired by Malcolm and others on the forum, I decided to do this. My tools included Dremel with engraver and drill bits, sand paper, emery boards, Styrene, filler, metal wire, and frustration. Oh did I mention frustration.

I started out with a RK NS steel cupola caboose.

Next I started filling in the windows, reconfiguring the cupola, enlarging the windows and using the engraver bit cut a new window.

After sanding I painted it with primer ( Krylon Rudy Brown)

3 windows on left side

4 windows on right side

I didn't like the look of the 3 windows on the one side, So I did more sanding cut out another window made some adjustments to the other windows mainly to kill the gap between the end windows from the stock mold and added thin strips of styrene. More sanding and then reprimed it with Krylon Oxide red primer. The one issue I had was I could not get the window ledge for the cupola to stay on. (I am open for suggestions)

Final configuration 4 Windows 3

At this point it is at it final configuration. I need to dill holes for the grab rails on the side, add brake wheels and source rivet decals or I might just leave it, replace the MTH trucks with Atlas caboose trucks, and start painting it orange( reefer Orange). A couple of lessons learned so far is the filler I used actually hardens enough that I could use the engraver bit which would of allowed me to fill in the middle windows and recut with proper spacing. The other thing I can do next time is to cut out a strip and laminate with a .10 sheet of styrene with windows precut( Something Malcolm dose) I also learned I am enjoying doing this. My path forward is to have it look similar to these below. I will admit I am no Malcolm or AMC Dave and a few others but I am learning. Thanks for putting up with this post.

Thanks Malcolm what I also should of said it has been very good stress relief for me. The windows were the biggest issue, not exactly square, a little to much fine tuning( there a little bigger than they should be) That's where your suggestion in another thread about .10 sheet of styrene and the wheel thing you use to make rivets I was going to do until I realized I needed a block sander to shave of .10 of the sides to make it flush. (I will have one for my next  CB&Q project). On the window ledge for the cupola. The only thing that I can think of was that the plastic bonding cement was not bonding with the filler, but then again maybe I am missing something..

Malcolm:  I just spent the last two days painting and putting on the decals, still work to do before I give it a shot of dull coat. I finally managed to get the ledges to stay on by laying down a generous amount of the ACC. Worked like you said to include my fingers stuck together for a couple of minutes.

Well it finally finished minus:

the wagon wheel( Which I may have now sourced).

The Brake wheels (also just sourced)

Hand rails (have to source thinner wire )

Atlas caboose trucks.

None of the above were show stoppers, but I will not weather until there on. This has been a great learning process and I know its far from perfect. The next one will be better. Thanks for looking and just don't laugh to hard. Last pic is next project.

Thanks Malcolm.

I kept messing with after I had put on the decals and dull coated it. I redid the copula today and over sanded the details on the front and rear enough that I had to remove them completely. Yes there are plenty of little thing that will be better on the next one. When I finally weather it that should hid most of the mistakes. Hope every thing goes well tomorrow.

Thanks Nick.

Its been a great learning experience and has been relaxing for me. I glad I did it. The big thing was getting the courage to start it. Like I wrote Malcolm, when I weather it it should hide most of the remaining mistakes.

Being a Q fan and modeler, I find that you did a very nice job on this way car. So you (we) have a learning curve and through trial and error, your (our) next project will only get better.

There are those that "think" about kitbashing or modifying a stock model and never get around to it, and those that jump right in and do it and learn as they go along.

I give you credit for tackling this project and making something of it, as you give me and other ideas of what can be done.

I did a simple mod to a Lionel 3 window caboose and made it into a Q waycar because there are  no prototype Q waycars on the market other than by 3rd Rail in brass.

I played around with kitbashing in HO for several years and have some special Q cars that I am proud of. Even had a couple of articles published on my projects.

Moving up to O gauge means that more kitbashing will have to be done if I am going to continue to model the Q.

Keep up the great work.

RAY

I just finished another one based on the NE-1/4 3 window wood Waycar.

This one started life as a Lionel NYC wood Caboose. Before Pics are from the guy a I bought it from because I forgot to take pics.

Its is a 95% solution. I say this because it dose not have the correct trucks and some other minor details. But it works

Replaced and modified a copula from an MTH Steel Cupola  caboose.

Used the interior from the same MTH Steel Cupola  caboose

Atlas Caboose trucks (Need new coupler)

Added Grab irons

Repainted using Rust-Oleum American Accents Primer

started applying decals.

Still to do : Find another set of CB&Q decals as the letters and numbers dissolved in the water/soap mixture.

I agree the atlas trucks are to modern for the wood Waycars and will work for the CBQ NE10(which was my first attempt) and up Waycars. Until I can find something suitable. That's what I am using.
