I've owned the Premier K-4 in black and gold trim for more than a year.  Terrific level of detail.  Runs smoothly from 1 scale mph and up (that took me by surprise).  Great sound file (the PSA is very entertaining to play for guests).  Pulls 6 Premier heavyweight passenger cars on level track with no problems.

The pick-up rollers are set close together, so I had trouble with it on Atlas turnouts (a Ross turnout solved the problem).

The Tuscan Red?  First MTH K-4 I ever saw.  One word.  Gorgeous.  Put that locomotive with the Red Arrow passenger car set, and you have a true head turner.

A K-4 has been on my list of engines for a long time.  I hope to get one some day.  My first choices have been NYC because that's what I always saw going through my home town and the Pere Marquette and C&O my other choice because my Dad worked for them.

That K-4 you got is a beauty.

Thanks Rick,

I looked on MTH’s web site but could find nothing about a Red Arrow passenger car set. Can you give me any specifics? Like web location? I’m really interested. I saw lots of red passenger cars, but nothing that said Red Arrow. I haven’t been in this hobby long, so I’m a bit weak on terms and brands.

Best of luck with your new engine George. You'll love it. I have the MTH Premier K-4s in black in both the modern and 1928 versions. Great engines. They run great and look terrific double headed pulling a passenger train. That tuscan version will look real nice with a tuscan passenger consist. I wish you lots of fun running your new acquisitions.

Thanks Gerry,

The two links are helpful. I’ll have to think about the Lionel cars. I thought that the MTH cars weren’t available without the engine. Too bad, but I’ll find something for that engine to pull. : )

Also, thanks for all the kind remarks, fellow forum members. It’s great having this group of people to reinforce what you do in this hobby. That’s what makes it so much fun.

I’m adding level 2 to my layout and the train table is a mess of tools, tools and more tools. I need to cut some wood in the garage but it’s soooo cold here, -10º forecast for tonight. All the schools in the area were closed today because of wind chill. Come on Spring…I’m ready.

Hi G3:

The original  Red Arrow set was MTH 20-3486-1, the K4 in black w/gold trim, with 1 REA reefer, 2 coaches, and 1 observation car.

You may want to look at MTH 20-40013 which is a 5 car Madison heavyweight cars (1 baggage, 3 coaches, 1 observation) in a paint scheme and carbody style that would match your Tuscan Red K4.  They are due out in February according to the MTH site.

I love my black K4, but still kick myself occasionally for not buying the Tuscan Red
