Off and on my Legacy FM Trainmaster made in 2011 starts pumping out an enormous amount of smoke. I mean an off the charts amount. I immediately turn off the smoke. If I turn right back on even on low it continues. I have to shut down engine and restart and then it works normal.

I don't know a lot about the electronics in there. My guess is the AC regulator acts up and puts out too much voltage. I'm sure this will not end well if it continues. Anything I can check? Tough part is it does not happen often and when powered down itstarts to work fine again.

I have found Legacy locomotives to produce just as much smoke as a mth.

Kevin, sorry...I sincerely meant that in a good natured ribbing way. I am a huge fan of both Legacy and MTH smoking abilities. No offense intended. When my FM acts up it puts out an incredible amount of smoke...way above and beyond the ordinary. I'm afraidif burning something out so am seeking help.

Jeff, you may be right.  If the regulator board is locking up, it may put way too much voltage on the smoke resistors and thus generate a lot of smoke.  Since I've seen a number of threads in the forum about those regulator boards, that would be my top suspect.  I believe the resistors in the new Legacy locomotives are like 8 ohms, so a high voltage across them would result in a LOT of heat, and thus smoke.

Its #1 on the listhttp://www.lionel.com/CustomerService/ReplacementParts/index.cfm?startRow=1&DOACTION=productPartFilter&PRODUCTID=8FB25A18-B4CA-4D4E-8A5D-FA9E3CD12752

I had the same issue but in reverse with a lionmaster challenger. It hardly ever smoked at all except for the one day when it began smoking like crazy, burned the resistor and the board. I emailed Lionel and they recommended the AC regulator, replaced it and all was well, aftyer replacing the burned up parts of course.

Thanks very much Rick O. I will order one and replace it before I run it again. It's still under warranty. I'll try emailing customer service first and see if they will cover it. I'm guessing they would want the engine back to make sure that is the problem. Understandable. Thanks again.
