Seems I may have done something wrong.....yes it wasn't broke, but could resist to try a quillable whistle...

Engine is 30-1647-1,  2-8-8-8-2 Imperial Triplex, so loaded sound file 20-3612-1, the priemier Triplex sound file. Got the quillable whistle, but had thumb wheel latency issues even when attached by cord. But lost the engine name. So attempted to reload the original sound file that I pulled from engine and things started going further south. No lights but sound and movement. So download and installed web site sound file, than had same issue and again no name, just engine 1.

Spoke to MTH and advised to reload chain files. Done, lots of hang ups during loading, but done. Lots of beeps (morse code?) after restarting, but got lights/sound/smoke and no forward movement but reverse. Ok, reloaded chain files again, couple of beeps again, seems everything is working but nameless. So reloaded sound file again, and still no name. And of course tried resetting features and a factory reset, but still no name. Yes I can edit the engine and add a name but if reset, name goes away and we have blank engine.

All of the changes where done with 5.0

Any suggestions, or solutions would be appreciated.

BTW: very nice steamer (my 1st steamer to try), runs very smooth at 1 smph, cool sound changes at varying speeds, and a good size when next to my premier diesels. It's a keeper. Will try quillable again when I do wifi.

Thanks,

Dennis

George,

Thanks for the response....

It was purchased new, on Nov.26, 2015 and arrived a week later and put in service. No service work other than some lubrication and what is noted in original post.

Here is another issue that just happened. So I got the nameless engine working and running on the layout. Doing some track work i.e.: shimming some track and switches, while engine is making laps/passes. Ran about an hour or so, than it makes the train wreck sound, stops lights go off, sound is hung up. All while I'm not touching anything and remote is still powered on. Turned off (power), restart everything and back to no lights or movement.

John,

Thanks for the insight, it was properly configured, direct from MTH, It's when I tried a sound file change with DCS 5.0 that things went bad. I have done changes in the past on the another engine and all went well, DCS 4.x. I followed the same procedure, test track, 10 signal, right cables, etc. all separate from the layout.  I'm not sure what went wrong.  Equipment, software glitch , gremlins......but not doing another with 5.0 till this is sorted out.

As a matter of fact, MTH has sent me a sound file and chain file to load, and to do it in that order also utilizing the flash button, Will see what happens. If no success, than it's a hour ride to MTH and see what they can do.

I am interested in what you find out Dennis.  I was holding off on 5.0 and the new service loader program, but had a customer that wanted 5.0 loaded up.  So I made the transition.  No real issues for me, but have had a funky load or two.  Also the service loader screen doesn't display the status of the load when loading sound file and serial data together.

I would open the tender and carefully pull the tender board connectors out and reseat them.  Make sure no damaged wires or such.  DCS DCC switch in proper position or the jumper installed.  This does sound like a DCS signal strength issue of some sort unless the board is messed up.  G

G,

I would do what you suggest if it wasn't 2 weeks old, but think this is something MTH needs to sort out/repair/replace. Perhaps this is also related to this DCS 5.0 reported glitch/bug.

FYI, installed the files sent by MTH service, engine is back to running but still nameless. Will keep you posted as to the out come once I hear back from the service center.

Dennis

We now have a name....Mth service did reload the serial file which added the name. Resets and all is still there. Why it got lost, not real sure other than what you mentioned G.

But, I think something is still not 100%. Reason being, it was locked in forward and no speed control and what appeared to be no watchdog signal recoginized as it took off when placed on track and power applied, the service center, able to correct by conventional reset. Here is something new, will run fine and than out of no where will like stutter, stop sound, seems like it looses power and than comes right back after a split second. The track signal is all over the place, 10's and than a drop to 6 or 7 and than ramps back up to 10's. When layout tested with other engines a steady 10. And this will happen on the same block, and varying locations and blocks on the layout. Than come back to same area and all is 10's. Smoke seems to vary also occasionally. Maybe I'm over analyzing and watching.  Again this engine has only been in service for 2 weeks. The draw bar connection is secure and snapped in place.

Perhaps I'll swap pickup's from the diesels and see what happens as I know they are good. Is this possible to do? The are a different style. Might be a solder issue or loose connection somewhere but I have never opened a steamer up and hesitate to do with out a good drawing/systematic. And don't want to void the warranty!

Not giving up and sticking with original sound file till all is straightened out.

Dennis
