As far as I know, Lionel has been the only one to do a red GP9 in 3rail, but, that isn't saying much. The GP9 that they used was the cheap stamped frame version that barely looks like a GP9. Back when Atlas did their GP9 I was hoping that they would come out with a passenger version, but, that hasn't happened. They didn't produce many of the freight versions either.

Lionel played things fast and loose with the GP body back then by making changes to the fans, cab, nose and calling them whatever they felt like.  For example if it had a low nose, the GP7 suddenly became a GP20.  Put 6-wheel trucks under it and it became an SD18.

It was a way of offering variety without a huge investment in tooling and the market was less concerned about accuracy back then.

Since I model N&W in the 1950's decade, I have collected several of the Redbirds from different manufacturers. The MTH versions from 2006 are the best I've seen. They are #510 (powered w/Proto2, Model 30-2689-1) and #515 (dummy unit, Model 30-2689-3).

Lionel issued two versions, #507 (1999, Model 28800) and #502 (1995?, Model ?).

Williams made a GP7 Redbird #620 with a single can motor and a GP9 (also #620, GP-9-213Redbirds 001Redbirds 002Redbirds 003Redbirds 004Redbirds 005) with dual can motors and True Blast horn & bell.

The last photo (#501) is of one of two MPC era Geeps that I repainted and decaled.
