Being from Nebraska and I remember seeing the Zephyr--I would like to model the train! I hope MTH or 3rd rail would come out with the set---but When? I am thinking of buying a set of 15 or 18 inch K-line CZ cars--but who has the engine that looks closest to the E-5 Burlington diesel? I've read all about the Key Model E5, but haven't seen one forsale, plus rather not sell my car to buy it! Let me know your thoughts,,Thanks, Don

I know MTH had a set a few years ago as my son bought one. It had the station announcements for the Nebraska Zephyr. Having lived in Omaha for three years we thought it was very cool. You might be able to pick one up somewhere. Good luck.

I came across this one, an American Flyer Burlington-Zephyr set.
Here's a link to it:

No doubt end price would be way beyond my limited budget, but if you really want one, go for it!
Happy Rails!

Somehow, I don't think MTH's set looks anything like the Nebraska Zephyr.
You could get close to the Q's E5 by adding fluting to a Lionel or MTH E6, but the square windows on an E5 are smaller to allow for a letterboard.
Modifying CZ cars would require A LOT of work to lower and articulate the cars, plus no domes.
Of course, in the old Burlington days, the Nebraska Zephyr could be pulled by E5's, E7's and/or E8's.
MTH and Lionel both made models of the Pioneer Zephyr, which is an entirely different train.

Lionel made a set of E-5 AA's # 6-14547 they were available with a 4 pack & 2 pack of highly detailed 15 inch California Zephyr cars.
I have the MTH Premier E8s ABA, and they do have the station sounds for the Nebraska Zephyr. The MTH product # is 20-2892-1. They are big engines for our little 6 by 11 layout. We do have a 6 car set of passenger cars to match but we use the engines to freight most of the time. Where at in Neb do you live. Nick
Nick, I am from Lincoln but now live in Montana--go back twice a year for the marathon and Football game. Thanks for the info on MTH set. Going to try and come up with a E5 engine. Maybe modify a E3 or E6 to look like the right train that is in Illinois! Thanks everyone keep the ideals coming in , Don
been there...
Good luck on your search. The hunt is all part of the fun.
Rusty, your are right the MTH sets are not that close to the real train. The only thing correct appears to be the station sounds. I am looking at some major modifications to the engine and cars to model the train. I think I'll work on my Great Northern and Polar Express sets and hope MTH or 3rd rail sees demand for a correct Nebraska Zephyr set with a E5 engine, 3 coach and an observation car! I'd be the First to pre-order a set!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for all the input---Don
