I am looking for an engine shed for my small railroad but can not find anything I want pre built.  I am looking for a small 2 stall shed that can accommodate 2 scale size 0-8-0 switchers.  I want them to be around 14 inches deep, and the track spacing 6inches apart on the center rail.

I really want something rustic looking, something that you might see on a short line, or even a narrow gauge rail road.  These are the only 2 locomotives my rail road owns so it is a small operation.  Heavy weathering is a must.

Anyone know of any custom builders or kit bashers that can accommodate this please let me know.

I was contemplating the same thing the other day, then realized that engines stay outside a lot.  A shed large enough to cover 2 engines also takes up a bit of space, something I don't have on my small layout.  I need to use what space I have to put something in place for loading coal, water, sand, and diesel fuel.

I was thinking maybe getting a simple conveyor to move coal from a pile on the ground and up into the tender, sand should be housed/dried so some kind of building would be needed.  Water could come in via a water column/pump coming out of the ground and diesel fuel could be a small storage tank.

I wonder if something with only a roof over 2 tracks (like a car port) would do the trick?

Would a local switcher on most RRs even have a place to park out of the elements?  Seems like I recall seeing a N&W steam switcher around Waverly Va that always stayed outside.  I would think most RRs would think a shed for every engine would be a waste of resources, only needing one for repairs/maintenance (and maybe not even then).

Has anyone ever built an engine shed using the PDM modular walls?:

I have thought of that too Bob, maybe just a single stall shed with another small siding along the shed to park the other locomotive but to also fill the tender with coal, using a coal pile and either a conveyor or a steam shovel to load it up.  I was alos thinking of a water column but have a small water tower behind the shed.  I wont need any diesel fuel.  Sand can be loaded into the locomotive by hand and buckets.

If I go this route then a Lionel engine shed would work great and I would keep it full length, no need to cut it down.

I would be interested in looking at this.  What is your footprint? 14" long -6" oc track spacing with Fastrack-that's 10" out to out of track with the roadbed & maybe 1 1/2-2" to the outside walls.  May be about a 14" X 14" building.  Hmm.  Is that going to look right?

I just looked at a Lionel single track engine house #6-24296, on their website with Fastrack in it, who's footprint is 5" X 20"  and could probably be shortened right after the 3rd outside columns and should end up being about 15" long.  Weathering is a breeze.  I can't tell if it's brick or wood.  I'm thinking it may be wood, which for your operation, may be better.  I haven't seen it, but I'll check one out later this week if you're interested.  I know where one lurks.

Leave one engine outside alongside the shed.  It may be a better look overall.  Better yet, keep it working.  Your railroad isn't going to earn it's keep with both engines getting serviced all the time.

Looked at the Lionel one again on the website.  It looks like it's brick with a nice arch over the main door and a side sliding door that could lend itself to a some nice detailing.  I know exactly what brick colors & detail I would do.  Not red.  I saw a building last week I would copy.  I'll take a picture tomorrow just for fun.

Someone has already recommended Crescent Locomotive Works.  I have purchased several of Dave's pieces.  I have been VERY impressed with his work and he is very easy to work with....nobody better.

Here is a picture of Dave's 2 stall engine house.

You mentioned a water column.  Here is Dave's.  I have two and they are incredibly detailed and reasonably priced.

Hope that helps!
