I have been running my MTH WP steamer, 20-3062-1, for years. Most recently the engine was drawing too many amps at power-up. For the first time I removed the engine shell and noticed a pinched wire, blue, it was still in tact and I added insulation. To make sure this was the problem, I power-up with the shell off all wires connected and shell grounded. It would than start up fine and play sound although at a low volume and the volume control would not work, but trying to start the engine speed at 1 mph with the handheld it would again draw too many amps. I checked all the wiring to ensure no shorting issues. Now it is dead, but interestingly it draws more amps at a transformer setting of 12 volts than at 21 volts. From reading the forum posts I am guessing it is a 5 v board and don't see any bulging capacitors. I think the short damaged the processor? Just a guess. Midge, at MTH, will not sell me a PS2 3v board. Is there anyway I can a get buy board and install it myself?

Purchase a PS2 upgrade kit.
It's cheaper than a board, you don't have to send the board back and MTH sells them to consumers, like you.
Only way is what Barry says. Are you sure the motor is not shorting/going bad? Unplug motor 5 pin and see if board functions fine less motion. G
MTH sells replacement boards to repair stations only, but I'm sure there are a few forum members who have access to the parts.
On a side note it sounds like the amperage spikes when you engage the motors, so it might be a failing motor or possibly a loose/broken wire on the motor itself. I once had a Proto 1 engine where one of the motor leads was loose, creating a short circuit. Once the lead was repaired the engine functioned normally.

My memory may be wrong, but at the DCS users meeting at York in April, didn't the MTH rep say it would sell the boards thru parts dept, or was it aome other item?
Sure Sales said X, but service runs Y. I think it was talk about PS-3/2, but in my conversations with Service they have never done that. G
GGG< I think you're correct when you say he was speaking of the PS2 5volt to 3-volt board.

Small point, however, to which "MTH Rep" are you referring? MTH wasn't at the meeting in October.
You are absolutely correct, Barry. That's why I said "April."
Welcome to middle age! Going further, OAIH!
Other than that, have a Happy New Year.
The current replacement for the 5V board is the PS3/2 sandwich, I recently received two of them when I ordered the 3V boards with the 5V connectors. Other than the connectors in different locations and no battery, they seem to function like the older replacement board. The heatsink mounting is different as well.
Berry, G and John,
Thank you for all the info and I will give it a try and order a upgrade kit as well.
Blake
Let me know if you need a replacement board.
Blake, I recently did a Premier GS-4 and reinstalled a PS-2 3V board right back into the shell. The northern are pretty standard fare. For the GS-4 I had to disassemble the shell a second level to gain easier access. It is worth doing it that way to retain all the light features. Then just change the battery and speaker in the tender.
If you go the board only approach the processor/Power Supply is $200 MSRP and the Hardware kit is $34 MSRP. So you can see that the cost exceeds the Upgrade Kit rather quickly even with a discount (which I do).
You can e-mail me if you need details on the conversion. If a tech does it you get a warranty and also a permanent name via the dealer loader.
Premier engines are well worth the repair from my perspective. G
Blake
