I have this standard gauge engine that was dropped off for work.  As you can see she is hurting, I am looking for opinions .. is she too far gone to repair.. can epoxy solve this... it looks like the cast part has warped and cracked.. it is all very brittle.    Any advice from they experienced tinplate techs here I would welcome gratefully

A replacement frame, boiler front, and steam chest should put it right. Looking at the what little I can see of the wheels, I am uncertain whether they might require replacement. I don't believe that epoxy will provide a satisfactory repair, as these parts are too far gone. The frame, steam chest, and boiler front are also shared with the Lionel #385E, but those are gunmetal color and would require painting as would the raw casting replacements. The tender was not mentioned and the IVES casting that was used is frequently warped and needing replacement also. It is as always, a matter of weighing the cost of parts and labor versus the value of the restored example and an original. MTH makes replacement parts and they are also available from Henning's Trains (forum sponsor) and George Tebolt Train Parts.

The cast parts are definitely history. It all depends on the history of it and how much it means to the owner.  I would call MTH as they may have the cast parts it needs then there is repainting to make it look right. If I were doing it for myself I would do a total strip down of the parts and paint but that's a lot of labor which  equals to a lot of money  that the customer may or may not want to invest in.  No quick fix unfortunately.

I just bought a bunch of cast parts for that very loco for one of my customers. Wheels, boiler front, steam chest and tender shell. I got them from George Tebolt. Had everything I needed for 3 different locos. I would have bought a used one myself but my customer wanted this one repaired
