I oiled all of the appropriate spots and greased the gearbox.
Any ideas?

My top suspect would be the motor. Can you run it with the shell off and try to localize it?
It might be your smoke unit also. I have a high pitched noise on one of my engines when I have the smoke turned on. I think it's the fan. Can you turn off the smoke and see if that makes a difference?

You might try oiling the motor bearings.
Roy is right, try oil on the motor bearings on both ends. That's certainly the first step I'd do.
The bearings are where the shaft goes through the case of the motor. On the opposite side, you'll see the end of the shaft. Start with a drop of light oil on each end.
What did you take off?
Sounds like something rubbing on the flywheel if that's the case.
Did you try loosening those screws and see if the noise is still present? Perhaps rotate the plate 180 degrees?
thanks for the suggestions. I will try
Love a success story.
When I hear a high pitch noise in the train room I look for my wife.
