Been running this engine without any problems until this morning.  It was happily running along and then began making a chirping/screeching noise and stumbling and stuttering along.  I'm new to trains but have reasonable mechanical skills, to me it sounds like a gear isn't meshing properly or is stripped causing the intermittent chirping/screeching sound.  I checked out what is visible and see no sign of excessive wear of damage to any of the various gears.  They seem to be meshing as they should and turning the drive wheels doesn't cause any binding etc.

I replaced it with another engine to make sure it wasn't a problem with the tender or any other cars in the lineup and no problems.  It's as if something is binding causing the noise and momentary loss of motion. Any thoughts on the subject would be appreciated.

I also removed the brushes and cleaned the motor contacts with some frog lube and then some alcohol. If you don't know what frog lube is, it's a plant based lube and cleaner designed for guns. But it does a fantastic job when cleaning any unpainted metal parts of my postwar engines. It's non toxic and also fda approved as edible.
