Need help trouble-shooting a 2035

It sounds to me like both ends of the motor armature need a drop of oil.

Add a drop of oil as David suggested, or better yet, some grease, it won't spin off as easy. If it stops, but starts again later, the brushplate needs replacing.

Chuck & David, I think you got it right, I put a bit of oil on each end and that seems to have stopped it for awhile.  Unfortunately it began again after running for about 45 minutes so it looks like the end plates will need replaced.  Thanks for the great advice.

Sounds like your engine needs a good lubrication and the brushes and armature cleaned as well. The older postwar and prewar engines will make noise if they need some lubrication or electrical tune-up of the motor and brushes.

Don't replace anything yet but clean and lube it first!

There have been several very interesting threads on this web site on lubricating and lubricants for toy trains.  It might be worth your time to search for these threads and read them. 

I had this same problem with my 2018 and my 2026. Some grease on the gears and oil on almost every other moving part seemed to do the trick.

I also removed the brushes and cleaned the motor contacts with some frog lube and then some alcohol. If you don't know what frog lube is, it's a plant based lube and cleaner designed for guns. But it does a fantastic job when cleaning any unpainted metal parts of my postwar engines. It's non toxic and also fda approved as edible.
