Need Help with Lionel 164 Log Loader Restoration

Cut the old cord off and then jumper 1 to 3 to run the motor and 2 to 3 to operate the solenoid.   That is using the wiring diagram that Susan provided.  If the motor still runs backwards, reverse the wires to the brushes at the brushes.  Do not reverse the field connections. 

Everyone...thanks for your help.  All of this information would have been really useful, except that my version of the loader must be the pre-war one, with only three screws/solder lugs in the upper corner underneath, and two screw posts on the side.

...so, how do I reverse the direction of the chain?

You have a later version of the log loader. If you look at Susan’s diagram, the heavy black dots are the terminal posts where power comes in. On your log loader the second terminal strip down is common and is missing. Those connections were moved to the terminal post in its new location. The three numbered terminals are still there.   To reverse the motor the instructions are the same, reverse the wires going to the two brush holders without making any other changes. 

I intended to replace the control box and all of the crumbly insulated wire.  But I could not locate a source for a control at a reasonable price.  With some uncertainty, I opened the old box, cleaned the contacts as best I could, and soldered new three wire cable to the old solder points.

I did the same on the loader end and connected the two cables. I hooked up two wires from the transformer, turned up the throttle, and...voila!!  I have a nicely operating loader.  The lights light, the chain operates in the proper direction and the dumping mechanism operates as it should.

Now, I have to rework a section of the layout to fit in the large footprint loader.  I  also have to repaint it since the previous owner sprayed it all black.  I can't replicate the original colors, but I want to brighten it up some.

All in all, with some effort, and lot of good advice from forum members, I have a nice relic of 1940s Lionel magic.
