Greetings All!!

I am seeking the help of the OGR Forum on a project that I am wanting to undertake.

I am looking for a Builder who is able to do custom shapes, angles, and features.  However, the unique aspect of this build, is that in order for it to match the prototype, it must be made to look like that it was built out of Limestone, Iron, Shale, & Stained Glass Windows.

I would consider that one unique aspect of this build, is that whomever is able to undertake this project for me, will not only pictures to go by, but I also have the original blue-prints that have been converted into CAD.  I have both Elevation and Interior schematics.

Thus far I have had a conversation with Dave at Crescent Locomotive Works, but that was a year ago, and never heard anything afterwards.  I have also had a couple conversations with Damien at Mainline Bridges, and he has expressed interest' in aspects of the project, but doesn't know if he has all the right tools to undertake the project.  And today I contacted Bill @ BTS, but he was very much not friendly nor interested in my asking questions, so BTS is not an option.

I am willing to listen to any suggestions/ recommendations of people to contact.

What I am looking for from the right individual or company, is that they are willing to pour their heart & soul into this project to make the model look like the prototype that still stands till this day.

Attached are a couple images and a cropped/ resized version of the Original CAD Drawings that I have to provide.

Side Note:  This building is still being used today and is fully accessible on the outside, and with specific permission one can access the floors above ground level, which is open to the public.

Thank you for your time, help, and input.

Regards,

I would second that nomination, but don't forget Alan Garziano, in whose modeling abilities I have great confidence, also. So, here, you have a couple possible choices, Mr. Eaton, and might speak to them both to see who would be the best fit for such a project.

Stuart Gralnik just visited my booth at York and showed me photos of a breathtaking model he did for a client in Park City, Utah, which was perfect. You could ask to see those pictures to give you further perspective. Also, Stu has an advertisement on p.74 in OGR Run 267, Dec. 2013.

Be aware that some custom builders might want actual compensation.  From what short glance I gave your project, I am going to guess at a minimum of five grand.

I once built a locomotive for time and materials - cost $3200.  I told the purchaser he would be better off waiting for Sunset.  He would have - Scott brought the same locomotive in at something like $800 five years later, and Scott's was a better model.

James,

I am the one Mike recommended above.  I have built an entire town in N scale down to the last detail for a museum.  I would be delighted to help you with your project.  Contact me and we can discuss the specifics.  I am known for keeping people's projects on budget and on time.  I look forward to hearing from you.

P.S. I will give you my phone number in an email.

You might try going to Les Lewis' web sight www.westportmodelworks.com where you can see his line of resin detail and building components. He has built a fabulous city hall model that is the same quality as you are posting about. Although he does not to my knowledge do custom building for others, if you contact him he may know of someone who does such work. Looking at the cost of his components and your drawings, I would suspect bob2 is correct that building such a project will cost A LOT OF MONEY!!!

There have been many posts in the past of folks who have built beautiful and complex stations like you are proposing and they take YEARS to build and advanced CNC laser cutting. Some have spent hours of work creating granite block exteriors. Perhaps someone can suggest a topic or member search that identifies such posts. I think johnboy? has a web collection of stations with their builders.

Best of luck in your quest, Paul Goodness

I do not understand all the stress over this building.  I looked at the pictures and plans he provided.  It is like anything else.  You just do it.  Textures, stain glass, etc are what is called for so that is what a good professional model builder does or he is not worth his salt.  I did not shudder when I was asked to build Fenway Park in O scale for a particular fellow's mancave sports memorial.  You just dig deep find the passion and do it.  I just find the empathy to walk in that person's shoes and see the desire they are seeking.  You have to become one with the structure you are building and have it be a part of you as you build it.  Then like a child, when it is completed, you send it off into the world with a good conscience that you have done your job well.

Another magnificent building that is an art of the past. It's amazing the massive step backwards we have taken in architecture from where we were 100-150 years ago, in my opinion.

if you have the time, I suggest trying to tackle this project yourself. Thats what i decided to do. Yes, it's a complete nightmare, but in the end I think you will be even happier if you complete it yourself. I got a lot of help from CSX AL and Johnboy, and others.

If you do decide to pay someone it would be hundreds of hours Of work that would really drive up the price.

Another name that comes to mind is Wayne Wesolowski.  His work has been featured in several articles in Model Railroader magazine.

His work is on this website...

And this news article celebrating Wayne's work seems to be spot-on for the type of work you seek...

Just another possibility, FWIW.

Rich,

I have checked out Stu's website several times.  I though somebody would suggest his services, just didn't expect for it to be the 1st two recommendations.  I am very much impressed by what he has done.  I will give him a call, and get his thoughts on this project.

Thank you for the recommendation.

You might want to check out Howard Zane.  He can be found by googling Zanes Trains.

He is a MASTER of detail.  He works in HO and O gauge.  At least 2 DVDs of his HO Piermont Division layout have been made and he built all of the buildings from scratch. His work is most excellent!! Of course someone of his talent does not work for minimum wage :-)

Check him out.  You will be glad you did.

I wish you the best with your project.

Cheers,
