I spent last week in remote Ely, Nevada enjoying some quality railfanning time on the Nevada Northern Railway. A nice collection of equipment

particularly the in service steam power consisting of vintage, but still young at over 100 years old, #40 a 4-6-0 and # 93 a 2-8-0. In service

diesel power is provided by SD9 #204 and RS3 #105. The highlight of the week was getting behind the throttle of both the SD9 and the

Ten Wheeler where my wife and I shared engineer duties on short freight trains. This thanks to the opportunity provided by the railway's

"Be the Engineer" program. Staying at a nice B&B less than a block away allowed us to visit the yard quickly in response to a whistle, bell or smoke

in the distance. An out of the way place, but well worth the time it takes to get there.

E.W.:  Really liked your photos and wished that I could have their "Be the Engineer" program.  I went there about three years ago, while I was in Las Vegas for a show.  About a five hour drive, at close to 100 mph, but it was the last day for steam trips before winter.  We rode behind #98 and had a nice ride.   I've always threatened to come back to take that ride behind the throttle.

But what a great place to visit.  Imagine:  A museum with vintage equipment that was actually purchased new for that RR.  And they let you have access to their shop, the storage buildings, pretty much anywhere you wanted to go to photograph the place.  One thing that I will look forward to seeing are some of the recently restored items that were done on American Restorations on the History channel.
