does any one know any info on what is going to be different?

Where did you see that a "new" sound system was being offered by Sunset?
Steve
I remember reading something about a potential new sound system a year ago in one of the newsletters, but it never came to fruition. I was very intrigued at the time and sure hope it is being revisited. I would love to see more sound options, especially in regards to the whistles.
Did you try resending your email to Scott?
ironlake2 may be confused,,,,,,, again.
He may be thinking of Sunset/3rd Rail announcing their changing from EOB to ERR TMCC command control systems in all their latest models (shipping since last summer).
Some years ago Scott explored the possibility of a "custom whistle" add on board, to the EOB system. Apparently only a VERY FEW of us were interested in that concept, which wound up being cost prohibitive anyway, and Scott eventually dropped the whole project. That is probably no longer necessary anyway, since all Sunset/3rd Rail models now come with the ERR TMCC control system.
this is what marty told me about lionel.. since sunset uses lionels TMCC systems.. Lionel currently has a new RCMC board system that is fantastic. It is somewhat trouble free. ..been talking to him about a TAS SAW system I want to put in my 3rd rail PRR S1 Duplex..and install lionels RS S1 duplex sound board..
This was printed on the sheet announcing the cnw h1a that it would be the first loco with the new sound system. Yes water, I know 3rd rail has the err sound system. My gtw northern was the last one to have the trouble prone eob system, thank heavens for electric rr and their new trouble free sound system. Probably will not happen as as water said they have announced stuff before and it never came true.
My (I;m guessing so not gospel) maybe lionel is releasing railsounds 5 boards since legacy has taken over their (lionel).
If you just got the new email from 3rd rail it tells you the cn&w h1 will arrive in april with the NEW sound system from lionel. This is where I saw it the 1st time, so Hot Water if you get the emails you can read it for yourself,

EOB is trouble system?? Id heard from other guys they like the EOB over the ERR plus EOB has the 4 chuff and ERR only has the 2 chuff..

We have an EOB expert in our modular group (Independent Hi-Railers, Midwest Division) and although we have had an occasional issue (usually when someone shorts out the track), I am very happy with the EOB steam locomotives I already have from Sunset/3rd Rail.
Concerning your statement that ERR has only 2-chuffs, you are flat wrong. The ERR TMCC control system works fine and does indeed have 4-Chuffs, as does my latest Sunset/3rd Rail steam locomotive model, the Southern Pacific black GS-4 Daylight.
A "new sound system" means that the ERR TMCC control system now has new & different sound chips from Lionel. For example, my new SP GS-4 black daylight has the correct "deep" whistle characteristic of SP Daylight passenger locomotives.
hot water go read this thread about EOB compaired to ERR.Id picked up a TAS EOB to setup in my 3rd rail PRR S1 Duplex.. will buy the S1 lionels sound card/board.

1) That is from 2009. As I said, we have more than 25 Sunset/3rd Rail steam locomotive models between at least five of us, all with EOB. I have even had two of my Lionel articulated model up-graded with EOB, in order to get the 4-chuff articulated sounds, and they work great also. You obviously do not operate your EOB equipped models as often nor as long as we do, between my home layout and our big modular layout, but none of us are having problems.
2) Good luck purchasing an S1 sound chip from Lionel!
Hot water ? Good luck purchasing an S1 sound chip from Lionel!??I'd called lionel just 2 days ago and they will sell me that board with chips ,Or I have 2 lionel techs that are on this site order it for me..I'd already asked them and they will do it..I'd got that EOB with railsounds for a steal of a deal..Guy is converting all his steamers to 2 rails..I'd saved my self close to 150.00..its would cost me close to 240.00 thats shipping & taxes on a Err cruise with railsound package plus the S1 sound board with chips....Im on a budget..got laid off and havent been re called back..
I still have some eob 3rd rail engines and hate the growling sound you get at slow speeds even if you mess with the background pulse you can;t get ried of it, also the engines do not run nearly as slow as err. The tach reader is a main spot of a problem with the system and have had most of my units replaced by third rail. now the new system is flawless for me so far.

well its better then thing or haveing the Old QSI..plus Lionel is comming out with there new system flawless to the T..
ERR gets the chuff of a mircro switch and cam on one of the axles on 3rdrail/Weaver engines; with two micro switches you get four chuffs.
EOB can generate the chuffs for the R2LC board and railsounds where ERR does not.
Due to lawsuit threat from MTH, 3rdrail, and Weaver were told you can not use the EOB programmable chuff feature(also the smoke chuffing from the EOB) and where using the micro switch method the last few years anyway.
Does this clear things up?
And Yes some EOB engines have the whine at slow speeds were ERR does not.
I'm hoping some one comes out with a new sound system to work with TMCC engines. I'm getting sick of the generic sounds Lionel offers to the others. Only other option is to upgrade to PS2

Is there a "sticky" that captures all the acronyms used on the forums
.
ERR - I think I know
EOB - ???
R2LC

No "sticky" has been needed.
1) ERR = Electric Railroad Company, aftermarket supplier of TMCC up-grade "kits".
2) EOB = Engine On Board. Originally supplied by Train America Studios. No longer available.
3)R2LC = One of the key electronic control boards in any TMCC control, usually inside the tender of steam models.

That why i'm buying the Lionels S1 duplex sound board with S1 chips in it..some of those boards you can now buy from lionel ..or you can buy just the sound chips threw lionel..So now you can ditch out those generic chips and install your sound prefferances ../or sound of your choice..Still Dont care for MTH PS2..Lionel still got them beat on sound quality..Would love to see both get there sound down to the T like HO DCC..ON steamers, you can actualy hear the clanking of the side rods..the moans and groans and hissing sounds..Kind of funny the O gage was advanced in the sound systems and now HO is beatting them now to me badly..
I didn't know you could do that from Lionel. I have some Hudsons that could better sounds. Will have to search Lionel products see if I can find one I like to try.
Well there are some holes to this method. Try looking for a J3a Hudson I had a while back and the railsounds are listed as Unavailable. Hit or miss I guess.
Where could one find out which sound chips are available, other than those available through ERR. If they are on the Lionel site then I guess I fail in my navigation skills.
Thanks,
Nick

look up your train in the partlist area..you'll see the pics of your train and tender..the railsound will have a number like 25 on the parts list..if theres a price beside it,,then it advailable..But also you can also call lionel to see if they can burn you a set too..

the ones I could find you can get is the J-3a new york hudson #5444,691-pcb1-156...and Boston&Ablany J-3a #607 691RS54E032..if theres a pic next to the price of the sound board, its advaiable to buy....No pic meanning its not advaiable
The parts list area is what I can't seem to find. I also don't have a train in mind as I was hoping to see all the options available. Most of my enginare are 3rd Rail models so I wanted to see about replacing the generic sounds with something more specific to the actual engine if possible. Is it on Lionel.com or somewhere else? Maybe my issue is that I use an iPad and it defaults to a mobile site.
Thanks,
Nick

And there in lies the problem! Lionel will sell ONLY those sound chips that they currently "license" to the TMCC Rail Sounds 4 up-grade kit installations. Try to purchase a sound chip for, say an N&W J Class 4-8-4 (deep whistle), or a UP Challenger 4-6-6-4 (deep whistle), and see how successful you are.

Hotwater, why are you so pessimistic for?I know awhile back you couldnt buy those chips. But now there releasing them.Think you or GGG told me they have release the PRR S1 sound..In april you couldnt buy the sound..Wanted to clone My 3rd rail S1 will the lionel S1 sound.. it used to have the qsi and that went bad..was running a MTH proto1 for time being..now since i'd picked up a TAS EOB system. that will be going in my S1..
Hotwater, why are you so pessimistic for?
I have been "pessimistic" for darned near 10 years, trying to purchase the CORRECT whistle sound chips for my various Sunset/3rd Rail steam locomotive models. Lionel has allowed ONLY two different sound sets, i.e. the New York Central whistle for ALL standard two cylinder steam locomotives, and the N&W "Hooter" whistle for ALL articulated steam locomotives. It is terrible to see a UP 4000 class 4-8-8-4, or a Northern Pacific Z Class Challenger with that stupid N&W Hooter whistle.
I definitely appreciate the DIRECT LINKS to Lionel's parts site for sound chips, and will see about ordering some "deep whistle" sound chips for my 3rd Rail NP 4-8-4, UP FEF-3 4-8-4, and the other articulateds.
Thanks everyone!
that stupid N&W Hooter whistle
Now you've gone and done it
that stupid N&W Hooter whistle
Now you've gone and done it
I was waiting for THAT! But, on any other locomotive, like a UP 4000, they surely sound stupid.
