The new Lionel catalog has two early 1950's style "AA" Alcos with diecast frames shown. I don't recall any of these being made since 1994, when the grey and yellow UP set was done. For the first time in several years, I am tempted to place a pre-order, but there are too many questions.

The catalog appears to show them with a nicely detailed one piece diecast frame. The 1994 version had the pilot made as a seperate piece. How will the new ones be made?

The catalog also shows them with the same truck sides that were used on the 1994 version, yet the LCCA switcher, which should also have those truck sides, is being made with bloomberg trucks. Which trucks sides will be used?

Finally, the 1994 version had motors and trucks that were very close to those made in the 1950's.  How about the new ones?

I hope these questions are answered during the pre-order period.

The reason L-T-I made the pilot that way back in 1994 was that they did not want to tool Electro-Couplers with a flying shoe.  Instead they used a die-cast thumb-tack coupler, and had to bring back the pilot skirt to clear the coupler.

It looked simply awful.

L-T-I later provided longer pilot skirts along with fixed couplers, but that solution stunk too, as what people really wanted was Electro-Couplers, flying shoes, and a proper pilot casting.

Hi CW,

I wonder if the couplers will be operating.  THe catalog makes no mention of the couplers on the engines, so perhaps that is an indication of how the front end will look.

However, it is odd that the picture in the catalog would indictate that it is an operating coupler, but I would assume that since Lionel did not mention it in the written description that they are not planning them to be operating.
