I received a note from Scott saying he has a chance to run some ADDITIONAL passenger cars.

"We have an opportunity to rush a run of Lightweight 85' Aluminum Coaches, based on the B&O Columbian Coach.

We would like to know if you would like to order Lightweight coaches from this production run coming in May or June.

We will base our production on your response to this email. The following Roads are under consideration and will match the painting and detailing on the Sleepers you are about to receive.

Each Car will retail for $179.95 + S&H, similar to the Sleepers.

Please fill in the qty, 2R and 3R you would like to reserve.

Peter you should not wait but should email him now. He is in China and is trying to see if there would be enough demand for another run of passenger cars. I think others have madw direct contact with him and they are reporting that he also may include  aome Amtrak if enough people want it also. I am wanting the CN PASSENGER CARS MYSELF BUT DON'T KNOW IF THERE WILL BE ENOUGH PEOPLE WANTING THEM TO MAKE A RUN.

Peter I received a note from Scott saying he has a chance to run some ADDITIONAL passenger cars. I do believe he is LOOKING FOR A COMMITMENT TO THE QUANITY, ROAD NAME AND 2R OR 3R. Also since some people did not find their road name on the list they have made contact with Scott and told him what they also would like to be considered. I think we will hear more from Scott when he gets it all sorterd out.

The following is what the letter says:

Response from Scott regarding Amtrak cars:

quote:
We will add Amtrak in for a 2nd run of these Coaches. The coach is based on the B&O Coaches we just did for the Columbian. It may not be specific to a phase 1 or 2 of Amtrak. Yes, we usually do 4 car numbers per road.

We will make a more formal announcement on our web site shortly. Things are happening fast.

I'm trying to find out what "may not be specific to a phase 1 or 2 of Amtrak" means. I emailed him back. I'm ok if the design of the car is slightly not correct, so long as the paint job IS. I have a hard time thinking GGD is going to make up a paint scheme, so I hope it just means that its a B&O car, not an Amtrak car, and I'd be fine with that.

The coach from the B&O Columbian is a Pullman Standard car and Amtrak did have Pullman Standard coaches in various seating configurations in Phase I and Phase II paint.  Phase one would be the scheme with the pointless arrow and Phase II is essentially the same design without the pointless arrow on the ends. I am in the process of researching prototypes now, but should the car run in Amtrak, it will be pretty accurate.  As Scott mentioned, this is happening fast and we are scrambling to research car numbers and names.

Some of the Pullman Standard cars did make it into the Heritage Fleet and were painted into Phase III Amtrak with the even red, white and blue stripes (think the original Atlas Horizon car scheme).  However, they were among the first retired as the Budd built cars were in the best condition when Amtrak inherited their car fleet.

At this time, it seems that Phase I paint would be most appropriate as it would go with the 4-4-2 and 10-6 sleepers.

This is the sample car for the sleepers.

New Haven would be a nice choice to go with the FL9, but New Haven's fleet of streamlined coaches were all corrugated even if they were built by Pullman.  The PS corrugated coach would be a nice model some day, but no one has made a mass produced that car yet.

Jonathan,

I looked in all my Seaboard books to see if they had purchased any from B&O or C&O but I couldn't find any.  I think most if not all of Seaboards cars were corrugated, not smooth-sided.

I would be all over a Pullman Plan 4140A 10-6 sleeper like the PORTSMOUTH:

You can't see the small fluting in the roof in my photo above, but you can here on the RICHMOND:

The problem the makers face is that plans like 10-6 sleepers had varieties.  Plan 4140 had at least A,B, and C variations, which were mostly window (resulting in interior wall differences) locations.

Unless a maker could do like OK Engines and start with a blank pattern, then laser-cut the window locations based on each individual RR (and car) the end product would be no better than we have now, a bunch of "fantasy" cars based on 1 prototype.

I have added the coaches to our online reservation system for GGD.

We will do these coaches in batches, based on reservations. The first batch will go into production in a few weeks. We will pick 5 of the most requested roads and run them first. The rest will be done in a second batch, and so on. There are minimums at the factory because of the labor intensive decorating of these models. So if you are wanting any, tell your dealer now, or reserve them directly as soon as possible.

Thank you,

Bob,
According to my C&O books, SAL purchased eight PS coaches from the C&O. SAL numbers were 6241 - 6249. However, the C&O window arrangement is different from the B&O coach GGD is doing. Also, the cars would need fluting applied only below the windows unless the SAL removed the fluting at some point as the C&O had to do on some of their PS cars.
Ken

Ken,

Thanks for clearing that up.  I read where Seaboard had bought cars from C&O.  I did see 1 photo of an ex-C&O car that had smooth sides, but I don't think it was this type of car.  All the other photos I found showed the lower fluting like you say.

Seaboard also got a lot of cars from FEC, but again I don't think they were the type in question.

Looks like Scott has added some roads to his reservation listing so far.
