Greetings all, My name's Robert, and I guess I'm the new guy here...

I'm in Wisconsin, a member of the Neenah Menahsa Model Railroad club. I'm also young in the hobby, being only 30 years old.

My dad's acquired quite a bit of O scale most if it from the 1960s or earlier, and some if it is in the process of recieving various levels of repair or rebuild. I guess the prize of the collection is a complete Lakeshore/Fox Cities 400 set that was entirely scratchbuilt by a jeweler named Doering, complete with a scratchbuilt E7 for motive power. After that comes a pair of Lobaugh kit-built Berkshires (Again dressed in CNW livery and getting remotored) followed closely by a KTM 0-8-0. (getting remotored) (ALL 2 rail)

I recently bought a scratchbuilt 2 rail CNW Class E Pacific (Not E-1 or E-2, just class E) that I'm in the process of modernizing and rebuilding. Its gonna get an NWSL 11.5:1 gear ratio and a coreless motor, some new 75" drivers, and sprung bearings on the axles, probably going to have to replace the side & main rods, and some other stuff... but that's a long, involved and quite torturous story.

I guess that's everything about me worth saying at the moment...

Wisco2r,

Just a thought.  You might want to rethink the 11.5:1 ratio for a 73" driver.  I think your best bet is the NWSL .6mod 21:1 gearbox.  Unless the motor you're installing has peak torque around 2500 RPMs the loco won't have much power and will run way too fast.  The 11.5:1 is really more for diesels with 40" (or less).

Again, just my thoughts,

Jay

Before we get too far into this, I was just explaining my fleet & my plans.

The coreless motor I've got for the 11:1 gearbox is a 3500 RPM unit & the 4-6-2 in question was easily capable of 90-100 mph in regular passenger service.

I do appreciate the double checks and thoughts, however.

While I'm at it, the Twin Lobaugh Berkshires are staying with their original 19:1 gearing,

and the KTM 0-8-0 is remaining at 16:1 gearing.

You might want to check out our publications if you are interested in 2-rail O Scale.
