New Hallmark Girls Pink Engine Out Today

just the locomotive?  or will the train be coming out in successive years?  a tiny white transformer would be a nice touch.

I managed to get two of the pink locomotives from two Hallmark stores this morning.

 

It's just the pink loco, no pastel cars available this year.

Yes, they are in short supply.  My local Hallmark store only got 7, and they are a major store.  All 7 were gone with the first 7 people who lined up 1/2 hour before the store opened.  Posted hours were 10am, but they opened at 8am.  I was in-line at 7:30am, and one of the lucky 7.

I thought this would be the case.  I ordered mine in July.  The manager thought they were ugly, and she actually wasn't going to order unless someone requested it.  I had to explain it's significance.  I wouldn't hold my breath for the rest if the set, Hallmark has never come out with add-ones, although it would make sense.

actually i thought this was a mini-ornament, but now i see it's the larger size.  i was out grocery shopping anyway, so i stopped at the local Hallmark store (~11am) and after wading through the gaggle of overly-happy employees, i discovered they still had two pink locos for sale.  as long as i was there i picked up one and the three pack M&StL work train.  i usually have a 3-4 foot tree at Christmas and the mini-trains are a good size for that.  i certainly don't keep them sealed in the box.

 

does it bother anyone else when they issue a locomotive without the tender?

 

ho ho ho ...still doesn't seem right in October.

not too far off the subject i hope, but is there a comprehensive list of Lionel Hallmark ornaments somewhere on the internet?  i must have about 40 pieces or so now (minis), but i'm sure i must have missed some.  has Hallmark ever made a Flyer or other train manufacturer individual or series?

 

I have an excel spreadsheet of all the Lionel Hallmark ornaments, regular and mini, including specials. Will upload today when I get a chance.

Thanks for posting; saw this thread on my smartphone while at the mall today to see a movie. After we got out I headed over to Hallmark to see if they had any left. Initially they thought they were out but after digging around the back room for a few minutes they found their last one.

 

I too have been collecting the full-size line since its introduction in 1996 (no interest in the minis). Back then I was 4 years old and I always got each year's editions in my stocking. Then they would go in the ornaments bin up to the attic until next Christmas. Every year when that bin came back down and the Lionel ornaments were peeking out through the side it really kicked off the excitement of helping mom and dad do up the house for Christmas time. So for me, continuing to collect them is a matter of nostalgic tradition, even though the days of stocking stuffers and a big pile of presents on the couch every Christmas morning are long in the past.

 

And I also have to agree that the special editions do seem to retain at the very least their original MSRP value over the years. I think even a few regular production ones like the blue comet passenger car and the holiday red Mikado have spiked in value for some reason.

"Hooked on Ornaments" maintains a decent list with pictures. Probably still a bunch missing like the ball ornaments and the Century Club miniatures, but a good reference for the common stuff.

The store nearby me in Kansas City still has 5 or 6 of the pink loco if anyone is intersted. Let me know.

i'm not sure how much one can nitpick an N scale sized Christmas tree ornament, but the paint on mine seems ok or better.  i do not notice any of the rivet detail up front and around the dome covered up and there is some very fine detail on the cab roof which is completely visible.  fluted side rods might have been a nice touch, not to mention valve gear, but again, it's an ornament.

 

i did find that list (thanks) and son-of-a-gun, i'm only missing two of the minis.

Yeah, just like the original 1957 Pink Girls Trains.  Almost worthless in today's market!!!

I got one today just because I think it is a cool piece of Lionel history. I couldn't care less what it could or couldn't be worth.

I also began collecting the series when it started in 1996.  I feel the same as Chris- I collect them because I enjoy them, and I don't care about their future "value".

 

My local Hallmark store still had 6 or 7 left in stock late this afternoon.  I also picked up the set of 3 mini-ornaments with the GP9, work crane, and caboose. I thought they were a lot more interesting than the pink loco... even though they're getting harder and harder to see at my age.  

 

They are very hard to get. My store only got 4.

FYI to all who are interested -
Hallmark released locomotives only from 1996 to 1998 and in 1999, they introduced a Lionel Tender. Since 2002 Hallmark has offered three train ornaments each year that complement the annual locomotive ornament.
Hallmark's miniature Lionel ornament series began in 1999 with the Norfolk and Western trio and releases a miniature ornament set annually. New Lionel commemorative ornaments are available at Hallmark Gold Crown Stores beginning in July each year, according to Lionel. Hallmark has been allowed to create these      ornaments through a licensing agreement with Lionel.

Certainly not the best way to do it, in my opinion.  Locomotives and tenders should go (and be offered) together.  It's one of the reasons I stopped collecting the things, although I do have most of the earliest issues.

FWIW, this was the first time my local Hallmark had a STRICT 1 per customer policy.

I used to buy the annual Hallmark releases, but have opted out the last 3-4 seasons. Nice collectibles, but a little pricey.

Last year my local hallmark didn't have any of the limited edition lionel ornaments. This year I had to go to a different store. I was the 3 person in line before they opened and they only had 1 lionel limited edition ornament. The poor guy behind me didn't get one. It's becoming to ridiculous doing this every year. I have every lionel hallmark ornament so I'm in to deep now. I also wanted to get this years pink engine because I have a 9 month old daughter.

one piece to a store seems completely ridiculous.  when i left the store with mine, there was one left which was on a display hook, no box visible and not sure what they would do with that one later.

 

my biggest challenge was leaving the store with only the Lionel ornaments.  the little Gee Bee looked like it would be a great load for a Marx 6" flat...

I wish Hallmarks policy was consistent throughtout all their stores. I never know if its first come first serve or if they're all held for someone who ordered in advance. Somehow scalpers manage to get a hold of plenty of them and sell them on eBay.

i've paid a lot less on the secondary market for a few of the minis i had to fill in since i really don't require pristine, NIB condition.  most "used" ornaments i've bought are generally in mint condition.  sometimes the box is a little rough, but i could care less about that.

I had 4 sets this morning in 3 different states.   1 of them is already gone , to friend over in NC.  I am keeping 2  of them,  and the other set some one can gladly have.
