Since about a month, Stadler Rail is in full gear shipping new trainset of the KISS family , for the Aeroexpress service in Moscow (serving the City and Airports).

Now shipping these 6 cars double-deck units from the factory in Switzerland is not without challenge. Since these unit are being wider by 2ft than a standard gauge version (Russia use the wide gauge of 5ft / 1.524 m) and also higher by 2ft, it's impssible to ship them by rail.

The only solution is via trucks, from the factory in Altenrhein (on the shore of the Lake of Constance) to Basel. Thats about 120 miles and take 3 days (mostly night) for the trip. There, they are being loaded on barge to travel on the Rhine to Amsterdam (Holland) and from there via sea and land again to Minsk (Republic of Belarus) to undergo commissioning work at the new Stadler factory there.

Yes only the first 4 trainsets will be build in Switzerland, the remaining 21 will be made at the new Stadler factory in Minsk. After certification by the Russian authorities they should enter service in spring of 2015, with the last one (of this order) in 2016.

Well first, April 2014, celebrating the first body assembly..these are all aluminium.

Ok.. loading on truck, without trucks...they will be installed in Basel before boarding the boat.

Sometimes no other choices than to cut through curves

Maybe a bigger radius is needed...these are definitively not made for 027 curves !!!

Aluminum doesn't rust.

It's pretty cool to see those trains chugging down the Rhine!  As has been said, it's amazing what people can accomplish when they are determined to succeed.  Manufacturing big stuff is full of challenges and creative solutions.

I was recently at the Boeing factory when some parts from Italy arrived.  It took about 5 minutes from engine shut down to unloading 787 sections.

Maybe some surface rust on the wheelset...otherwise they are well built.

The many who were ship to the USA (not the same version) did not have issue either and offer great reliable service..and the sea voyage maybe even longer

Well in Zurich, there is the main train station...with almost 3000 trains arriving/departing daily (that's an average of 1 per 20 seconds) it's a terrific place for railfanning..there is always something on the move. High Speed Terminus of the German ICE, SNCF/Lyria TGV, Austrian Railjet, Italian Etr 610 and Swiss Icn and Etr 610..they can sometimes be spotted at once.

I saw a couple of videos on Youtube depicting Berlin before and after the war - the before videos showed an amazingly developed Berlin with many rail lines running to and through the city. Remarkable for 1935. I would think any city would consider it self lucky to have a rail network as extensive as that was even today. Of course, it was all destroyed shortly thereafter.

Where are these operating in USA?

The Stadler model in service in the USA are of the type GTW 2/6...they are diesel-electric. These are cool light rail dmu, they feature a litle power module (or 2 depending on the configuration) in the middle. It look like a tiny B unit has been squeezed between the 2 cab car.

So far the NJ transit has 20 of them, on the Trenton-Camden line, they got a different front, compared to the usual one.

NJ Transit GTW

These were actually shipped by air from the Stadler factory in Berlin, Germany, on board an Antonov 124-100.

GTW loading

6 are in service in Austin. TX by Metro Rail..these were shipped by sea, but first by trucks to Bremerhaven as the US wheelsets are not compatible with Euro one.

GTW-2-6-Austin

And the Denton County tranportation, TX has 11 in service..these also were shipped by sea and trucks.

And 8 are on order for the new eBart line of the San-Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit..

No picture for this one for now.
