hi everyone , I'm thinking of ordering or getting the new Lionel legacy shay coming out in cass #6. Do you think it's worth waiting for or getting one of the 3 trucks currently on market. I'm going to cass end of month for first time and I've always loved the shays. Every time I take my son to a train museum or train ride I try and buy a 0 gauge piece as a reminder! Just wanna know your thoughts thank you

I really like my MTH 4 truck shay.

I have the TMCC 3-Truck Shay and the Legacy 2-Truck Shay, neat little locomotives. They are somewhat finicky, lots of moving parts.

The new one apparently is using the same tooling as the original 1992 model that was made in Korea by Mike Wolf/Samhongsa, which has been one of my favorite designs of the scale Lionel locos that were new in the early 90's.
If you're willing to put in the extra payload for a Legacy equipped version (first of these Shays with Legacy I believe) and of course whistle steam, I'd say go for it. If you rather save money and buy the original 1992 or a later TMCC one, they are out there in supple amounts and at much lower prices.
Just as an FYI, I have the MTH PS3 4-Truck Shay and it's among my favorite engines.
Although it's advertised as requiring O72 curves, I can attest that it negotiates O54 Gargraves curves, as well as O54 Gargraves and Ross turnouts, just fine in both forward and reverse, with a string of MTH operating log dump cars in tow.
Additionally, I also tested it on MTH's O54 Atlas test track before I purchased it. Again, it ran just fine.
If I'm correct and not mistaken, I think the new one has the same Flyer/Pullmor as the Class A meaning it won't be able to lash up and has a sensitive throttle
It certainly doesn't have a Pullmor motor, but it might have the back-EMF motor driver and not the Odyssey II electronics.

Definitely not so, too.
The Lionel N&W Class A 2-6-6-4 had a DC can motor, though it did not have Odyssey. I have one. The "Pullmor" has not been used in modern Lionel locos, with certain nostalgia-driven exceptions.
I do not recall if the Lionel Class A was ever re-issued with Odyssey, but being one of the "lawsuit engines", I do not believe that it has been.
Of course looking up whether or not there has been a second offering of the Class A on Lionel's website would be too easy and make too much sense, but I'm sleepy and need to go to bed.

It most likely will end up having the BEMC control board because of the whistle smoke unit.. But! the Legacy two truck shay does have a RCMC. So we will never know till we open one up.
I know the 2-Truck Shay has the RCMC with Odyssey II cruise, and it works fantastic, no complaints at all on that one.
Hey folks! Maybe someone can answer a question for me. I just got one of these from a collection, but I am curious about the smoke units. In the manual, it says not to pour smoke down the whistle, and only down the stack. However, looking at the parts website, it looks like there are two units; one for the whistle and one for the stack. Am I missing something? I ask because my whistle smoke is not working, but my stack smoke is working just fine. Thanks!
I think for some locomotives, they got the manual wrong. What's the Lionel product number?

Well, looking at the stacks, it's clear that adding smoke fluid to the main stack isn't going to do anything for the whistle, so I'd add smoke fluid to the whistle hole.
The main stack goes straight to the smoke unit.
Here's the whistle smoke funnel, and there's no other way for smoke fluid to get into that smoke unit.
The smoke units are identical, and there's only one hole for smoke to come out and fluid to go in.

That’s why I was confused, but this helps. I’ll try it and report back
Update: Yep! Two smoke units, second one needs smoke added down the whistle. Thanks y'all!
