I am really liking this as a fantasy piece. Does anyone know if the tooling is related to the 1989ish T1 which was one of Lionel's first scale steamers?

It is not the original late 80s/early 90s tooling. Lionel made new tooling starting with the previous run of these from a couple years ago.
It’s not actually a complete fantasy paint scheme. Listen to notch six part one to hear the history of this engine. The original artwork is now in the Conrail museum
Well, it's close to a fantasy paint scheme, it never happened.
Its stunning either way ... a must have. I was just hoping some aspects of the tooling at least dated back to 89-90.

The tooling is better in every way
Will passenger cars be made for this I wonder? The Podcast mentioned 1 passenger car in the Contrail scheme but I am not seeing it in the catalog.
The early tooling belonged the MTH. They made the engine under contract for Lionel.

There was an observation car drawn up as part of the concept art. Knowing Ryan and the way he likes to abuse my wallet, I could see heavyweight cars for this at some point. The other interesting thing is that for the few short years that the OCS E8's wore Conrail blue paint, they pulled heavyweight cars behind them. So thinking ahead you might eventually see blue heavyweight cars to match the T-1 but that would also be prototypically correct to go behind a set of blue E8's. Ahhh I can hear the sound of the money being sucked from my wallet as we speak.
I would definitely buy some Conrail Heavyweights. My other favorite in the catalog, the Amtrak E8s, should have a set of rainbow cars to pull at some point as well I imagine.

Mr muffins is making a custom run of Amtrak bloody nose e9s.

Oh gosh please don't tell me that. My wallet is shaking. lol Now we need a 1970ish Penn Central mixed train...a few passenger cars with mixed roadnames and a bunch of TOFC trailers up front.
Those early Lionel scale steamers made in Korea were produced under contract with Mike Wolf but the tooling belonged to Lionel. Hence we have seen the Niagara, Mohawk, Turbine, and I still think this T1 has an enhanced version of the same basic tooling. So many casting lines match up. Speaking of Turbine, would love another offering of this with hopefully the 3rd time being the charm. 1st version 1991...major paint rash as evident on many Korean sourced locos. Blisters form under the paint and round chips of paint fall off drivers etc. 2nd Attempts...2014ish...Turbines arrived in wet boxes... so I await a 3rd run.
@Mike W. Back when Lionel first released the T1 4-8-4; they put out a video where they talked about the model and specifically said that the frame, shell, and tender shell were all new tooling (reference). So I am pretty sure they would have stated that it's based on a modern interpretation of that original, like for example the Vision Line 700E.
To each his own! Conrail 4-8-4? Maybe in black, then again, maybe in Reading paint. I can remember Marx doing a bunch of little steamers in Penn Central. Kind of the same thing to me.

PLEEEEEEASE Lionel, don’t use those HW coach with an observation open vestibule cars. That passed muster in the 90’s, but not today. For the Loco, this time filled porthole windows, and Conrail 4022 had no dynamic brakes.

The Marx loco's didn't cost a week's (or more) pay.

While Lionel is devoting much of their effort to the high end, I've long ago decided to not wait (and good thing too!). Inaccuracies aside: I can easily accept that. After all, the history of 3-rail trains is built upon compromise. So, repaint me happy.
Right along the lines of what Rusty Traque said, "The Marx loco's didn't cost a week's (or more) pay," I can't imagine what Lionel would be charging for these items if they did make them, since many of the separate sale traditional line rolling stock MSRP are not far behind the higher end scale versions.

A WEEK's PAY? What Are you doing that Im doing wrong! For the MSRP it's 3/4 of a year before I could save that and that's WITHOUT any BILLS! I hope that you are saving for retirement.

Yes I have by not buying any fantasy locomotive made available. A practice I continue during retirement.
