I've just received my Lionel GP35, and it is a beauty. It arrived in perfect condition after its journey across several continents, and after lubricating her before use, I placed her on the track and fired her up.

For any who have not seen this locomotive in the flesh, it is beautiful. The illustration in the catalogue does not do it any credit at all. The detail is amazing. Even the step plates on the ends operate. The pilot & truck details are excellent, as are the myriad of other details.

The sound is great, and the smoke is sufficient to lay down a naval quality smokescreen. She smokes so profusely that I had to turn the smoke down to low in order to see across the room. This locomotive runs as smooth as silk too.

Thank you Lionel. I'm really pleased that I have purchased this locomotive.

Very nice Nicole.

I'm still waiting to see actual pictures of the Southen Pacific verion.  I'm curious to know if Lionel included the SP lighting package (horizontal Mars lights and single red gyralite on the nose).  The catalog picture appears not to have them, but If they do on the production model I may very well pick one up.  Otherwise I'll pass.

Thanks Killian.

I'll try to take some more photo's tomorrow. It was already dark by the time that the postman arrived here today, and so I had to photograph under florescent light, which is not the best choice. I chose Milwaukee Road so that this locomotive would compliment my Milwaukee F7 A-A set.   My fictional railway world is based somewhere in the vicinity of Chicago, so that I can run more or less anything that I like without having to stretch the bounds of reality too far. All I need now is for Lionel to finally deliver my set of Milwaukee aluminium coaches, and my California Zephyr coaches to go with my Burlington F3 A-B-A set and I'll be one happy bunny. (At present, the Polar Express is providing my passenger accommodation, much to the surprise of the local populace.)

I suspect that my friend Nicole will probably beat us to it with an in-depth review.  If she does one for this Geep like she did for the Remote Thomas, it will be well worth reading.

I saw in the Lionel instructional video for this engine that the marker lights in the direction of travel go out when the engine starts moving. They do on my new Sharks, also. This didn't used to be true on Lionel engines. Prototypically, I thought marker lights stayed on regardless of the direction of travel.

I believe they did this to solve the problem of the lights not working correctly when in MU.

I received my GP35 last week from my LHS and it really is stunning. I agree with the level of detail and I bought the UP 753 road number version. The colors are crisp with no paint flaws that I can see. I looked at photos of UP GP 35 engines and so far everything seems correct, at least from my novice point of view. I was concerned about how it would look with my DD35a units and it looks fantastic. Paint color seems to be an excellent match and the size fits right with the DD35a units withthe GP 35  still being a good scale example. I do not have  way to measure to see if there are any real significant differences. The sound quality is amazing with the horn sounding very much like a GP 35 horn. I can truly tell what I am running by just the horn. I ran the two units together and using the 1.51 Legacy the operation is wonderful. I have both horns and whistles at the same time. Fun. Smoke output is tremendous and I usually use low or medium. Running is very good with good slow speed running and good response. I think that this is a really a great value from Lionel and this is an example of what Lionel needs to do more of and in this price range to promote more Legacy users.

Odd. I wouldn't think it would be that difficult to wire it so all the marker lights just come on and stay on anytime power is supplied to the engine.

I imagine that would be easy to do.  Changing color of the marker lights based on the position and direction the locomotive was facing in the MU was the issue on the Milwaukee F3's.  Noticed when the F7's showed up the marker lights worked just like the GP35.

Was there a fix for the F3's?  My lionmaster SD80's have the same issue.

No fix for the directional ability of the lights in MU when displaying both front and rear lights.  Looks like their solution was to only illuminate red when in rear/reverse configuration on the newer models.

My current layout is a very temporary affair. It consists of 2 loops with a couple of spurs and a crossover. No scenery to speak of, apart from grass mat and a few items placed to try and make it look a little less bare.  I had hoped to be building a much grander more permanent layout by now, and I have it all planned out, but circumstances have prevented that at this point.  Still, at least I can run my trains, and in my mind I can visualise my layout as I had hoped it would one day become.

No new photo's today I'm afraid.  I'll try and take some over the weekend, and hopefully a quick video of the sound and smoke features.

Nicole,

I have MTH's PRR GP35, build just a few years ago. It's a new model and I quite like mine. My only real beef is the trucks and their placement. I got the mine from the first batch that MTH produced; not sure if they changed the trucks, after that run?

How's the trucks on your Lionel creation?

BTW, all the new Lionel units shown on this thread show really well.

Previous Lionel engines had white marker lights front and rear, which would stay illuminated (which is prototypical enough). I'd just as soon they go back to that.

A very nice looking locomotive. I didn't order it because I already have a pair of the Atlas ones, but the Lionel looks like it has a similar level of detail.

Nicole, welcome to the Milwaukee Road beer-drinking society! I had no idea you were a Milwaukee fan. You might want to consider joining the Milwaukee Road Historical Association.

Here's some inspiration for a Milwaukee Road passenger train. I call this the Great Wall of Hiawathas.
