John, I have not received my Acela set yet.

In the Youtube video that Dave from Lionel did to preview the Acela he lifts the cover off the top of the engine.  It looks and sounds like it uses plastic clips to hold the cover on.

Yes, the cover/tab is the same on the new model.  One engine the cover came off fairly easily while the other engine was much more difficult.  For the problem engine I ultimately used a plastic razor blade to help release the clip, I did consider a tiny screwdriver but didn't want to damage anything.
